Ashley--
It's nice to meet you as well! I thought I'd post my experience here so folks could see it if they are interested...
I have been taking 5htp for a few weeks, so I thought I'd share my experience. I will also post later once I've had more time with this supplement. Sometimes it's hard to know how one feels, when you've been dizzy so long!
I have been taking 25 mg of 5htp at night. 50 to 100 mg daily is recommended in general. Main thing I noticed almost right away: better night's sleep. Since onset of dizziness, I've been waking every 2 or so hours and then waking very early...no ability to doze as in the past. 5htp is great for sleep and reducing anxiety.
I have also been extremely depressed with this illness (VN? MAV? started Dec. 1). First B vitamins and then this 5htp have done wonders for me, in the sense of pulling me back to at least feeling OK--I'd love to feel super happy, but everything in good time! 5htp has been studied in clinical trials and has very few, if any, side effects. (I've had no side effects other than feeling a little flushed and anxious briefly the first time I took 50 mg...I cut back to 25 and now have moved up closer to 50. Most people have no side effects at all.)
I also think my dizziness has been slightly reduced since I started taking the 5htp. Even my PMS time, normally a really hard time for me during this dizzy illness, is going better with this 5htp.
If you do decide to take it, I'd love to hear about your experience. I'm also looking into SAMe, which is apparently great for mood as well.
