Inner Ear Disorders and flying

I’m about to have busy time flying on a holiday and then business trips so I wanted to check how it can affect people with inner ear problems. Does it depend on what problem you have (I guess it does)? Is there anything that could be done to prevent problems after a flight?

My own experience shows that I was OK to fly after I had labs but after a relapse which happened a week after my last flight I’m not so sure (though it could’ve been just a coincidence).

Thanks.

Alex

Re: Inner Ear Disorders and flying

Hi Alex sorry to hear you are still suffering nthis setback.

Flying I have never had any problem with, done loads of very long filghts and many with quick connections in hot stuffy places, I have really NEVER noticed anything to make me feel worse at all. I dont eat on planes I just drink water, so I dont suffer Jet lag as such I just try to sleep as much as possible as usually I have to get off the plane and start working straight away. I guess if I had had setbacks after each flight I would have given up flying by now, that would have meant giving up my work also.

Hope you manage to take those flights without any problems and feel better soon.
Jayne

Hello alive76,

Have you ever been diagnosed or treated for this elevation-related problem? I have the same thing and have had several experiences, especially in Switzerland.

What do you use to fly? Or don't you fly anymore?

Thank you in advance!

Answer is YES!

The very first time I had my first bout of dizziness (which lasted 10 days) was the second to last time I was on a plane.
I flew from Denmark (sea level elevation) to Switzerland (400 meters to 2000 meters).

I was down there for 10 days. I had this bobbing/rolling/floating sensation 24/7 in those 10 days. I landed in Zürich, which is about 450 meters up. I then spent some days in a place at 800 meters and finally the final days at 2000 meters.
When I landed back home in Copenhagen (sea level), the dizziness was gone!

Why am I telling you about elevation?
Because I know a lady from Australia, who suffers from dizziness for weeks after each flight. She told me that somehow the cabin isn't pressurised properly on all flights. I don't know what she meant by 'properly' Maybe air pressure in the cabin is supposed to be like what it is at sea level? I don't know.
But she told me that many people suffer from dizziness because the cabins aren't pressurised 'properly' (whatever that meant exactly).

I have a theory that maybe what caused my dizziness for those ten days were the sudden air pressure differences. Especially since the dizziness went away right after stepping out of the plane in Copenhagen, which is about 2 meters above sea level. (I was drunk n the flight home, so I can't tell you if it had stopped aboard already)

I might add that I've always had sensible ears to sound and air pressure.
I always had my ears pop a lot whenever we drove in the mountains.

So yes, I definitely think flying can affect dizziness in one or more ways.
Whether it will affect you I cannot say, obviously.

Good luck in whatever you do. (I would have taken the train instead. :P)

Re: Inner Ear Disorders and flying

Thank you everyone. I have flown several times after my problems started and never had an issue. I also drove at 3500 ft altitude and didn't feel anything. It's just the fact that my last relapse happened a short while after my last flight.. I'm a bit worried...

I love trains and try to use them whenever possible but couldn't find any that would take me from London to Moscow and then from London to Washington so I have to fly

Re: Inner Ear Disorders and flying

Hi Miron
I have taken about 25 round trips by air in and out of the UK since Jan 2006 when I first got sick. Not had a single problem and in fact when I was as my worst with ear fullness problems it actually made me feel clearer in the head. Looking back I realise now I was more disabled by worrying and getting anxious about what might happen than anything else.
travel safely
