Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

For the past 2 months my body feels unbalanced (leaning to right side). There is absolutely no pain, spinning or dizzyness (like they describe in vertigo disorders) but just the very odd feeling that I'm being pulled toward the right - this happens when I'm walking, standing and sitting. Visually everything looks fine and I can walk in a perfectly straight line and do all sorts of balance exercises. I've seen 2 doctors already and they don't have an answer. They basically use an otoscope (or whatever you call that instrument) and aside from wax and a tiny piece of cotton from a q-tip, they see nothing wrong. I had a hearing test and scored almost perfect (but my right ear drum is a bit rigid). What other tests can be done to figure this out? Coincidently at the same time my throat feels really tight although I have no clue if this is related to my unbalanced feeling.

I'm a 30 healthy female so don't understand how this all came about and it's so frustrating! I have gotten quite depressed over this. If it is as simple as an inner ear issue, why can't the doctors see something or could it be something worse (to do with the brain)?

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

Go see a neuro-otologist or an ENT that works with people with vestibular disorders. It sounds like you are experiencing an atypical BPPV or vestibular neuritis. You can also see a vestibular-trained physical therapist and get evaluated and start treatment if they feel its appropriate.

Inner ear damage can't be see by looking into your ear. Other tests can be done, ENG, etc, but a good doc/therapist can glean a lot of information from tests in the office with minimal equipment.

Good luck!

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

Hi there, I just stumbled across your post and 6 mths ago I was having the same issues! I felt like my right arm was hanging and I only slept comfortably with my arm stretched behind my back. Any how I ended up going to a chiropractor and I was misaligned and my one side was actually 2 inches shorter than the other. He has since put me back in alignment and the symptoms have diminished. NOw I go to see a Atlas chiropractor who is a little different than a reg one as no cracking is involved but I suppose the end result should be the same!!

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

I already went to the chiro and after a series of treatment, my problem still persists. He thinks it's anxiety/stress related, especially since I don't have any dizziness or spinning. I don't feel a particular body part hanging but just the sensation that I'm pulled to one side or this drunken feeling but I can walk perfectly straight and physically I'm fine.

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

Hi xoxoLife! I think I'm feeling something similar to what you are feeling. I feel as if I'm being pulled from behind, the left side of my lower back to be exact. It's a weird sensation. Like you: I can walk straight, no real "vertigo', but just this feeling of being pulled in a certain direction. It's as if my center of gravity migrated . I feel it sitting down (right now ) standing, laying down, even in the car. I think in my case it may be related to something in the inner ear since I also have sensitivity to certain sounds, but this pulling sensation has been happening for 8 consecutive days now. While the sound sensitivity has been going on for over a month.

I'm in the process of getting tested by an ENT, so I'll report back if he finds something. Please do the same !
Good Luck!

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

Any luck on the problem, I have the exact same thing and I was told it was anxiety. I feel more like my body is about 2 feet to the left of me, and the same feeling of being pulled or something. My left ear is ringing, five months now, and I have a lot of fullness/pressure in left ear, not to mention constant pain and cracking on only the left side of my back. Its making me quite depressed and I would love to hear a response. I thought I was the only one with this problem. Thanks in advance.

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

I'm anxious to hear back from the person who started this thread on her current condition or anyone else who has commented on it.

Like the original poster I too am 30 and have been deadling with this issue for about 3 1/2 week now. I haven't panicked yet or even seen a doctor because I've been deadling with all types of anxiety related issues over the past 2 1/2 years...this current sense of off balance leaning to the right side I assume is just the next silly thing I have to deal with and it will go away on its own just as certain as some other chonic problem will pop up.

Here is a list of what I have dealt with since the second half of 2008...

- Zoned/spaced out feeling triggering panic attacks. The sense that I'm in a perpetual dream state. Helps to keep my mind busy.
- upper stomach/lower chester gastro issues. Indigestion triggered or by carbonated beverages. Feels like my heart doing flips in my chest. Not painful but discomforting and occasionally strong enough to knock the wind out of me
- Vertigo. Came out of nowhere one day in June of 2009. Needed to medication to stop the spinning that initially worked, but...
- Off and on strange feeling over the next 9 or 10 months around my eyes and in my head. Would get what felt like a calorie type rush every time I took my first bite of food for a meal or first sip of a drink. My eyes would easily get tired and my head would have an occasion numbness feeling. I'm still not 100% even some 21-months later.
- Stiffness in hands forearms and other limbs. Feels like muscle weakness or lack of circulation to my extremedies. Still get this feeling occasionally although much less so than a few months ago.
- Currently a strange sensation of my body leaning to the right constantly and slight dropping or numbing feeling on my right side (face, kneck, arm, etc)

With the exception of the medication I got to stop the vertigo spinning it should be pointed out that I have had several tests and doctor's visits over the past two years which have uncovered nothing serious (which is a relief). Yet I feel a certain sense of general anxiety or depression knowing that I cannot seem to go more than a couple of weeks without having to deal with another physical issue. I'm 30 and feel like I'm 80 many days...

Anymore info on the leaning thing would be much appreciated...thanks!

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

The problem is likely related to the inner ear, not the outer or middle ear. Hence why your doctors were not able to see any abnormalities with the otoscope.

You need to see an ENT who can do an ENG/VNG test.

Unsteady mess

I also feel like a force pulling me strongest to the right, although I experience strong forces pushing me back to the chair when I sit, pull me to roll over when I lie down. It has to do with my right inner ear. So how was your test with the ENT?

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

Hello, I'm a 23 year old female. I woke up this morning with the same problem, only I feel like I'm being pulled over to the right. It doesn't matter whether I'm sitting or standing, it's the same feeling. I can also feel a bit of pressure on the area around my right eyebrow. Fluid in my head or something? I've never experienced anything like this before and I am a bit worried. What if I fall over/pass out?
I'm not on any meds apart from the contraception pill Dianette.
I'm thinking it has to be something to do with an allergy... I'm always sneezing and blowing my nose recently, hayfever or something.

Qysue.....I'm wondering how long you have suffered and what you have been diagnosed with. I have the same symptoms as you for pAst 4 weeks. Feels like I'm on a boat and have a sensation that I'm being pulled to the left. Feels like I'm going to fall over to the left and when I lay in bed I feel like I need to roll over left. Also feel like I'm being pushed back and down into the sofa. I can't wait to get home and rest my head on the sofa because it feels like I must exert so much effort just to keep my head in place! I am going for an MRI Tuesday and had VNG testing done minus the caloric test ( I freaked out when they started it! ) just wondering if what we have is the same. So worried I won't get a diagnosis and it may never go away!!

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

Mine only lasted that day and I haven't had it since luckily. I still have very bad hayfever, but I can handle that as long as that awful leaning feeling doesn't come back!

Re: Body feels like it is leaning to the right side

Could be the Utricle organ in the inner ear, which when not functioning properly, can change a person's point of relative straightness. To compensate, the brain will have them tip or lean to one side or the other.

BUT, to know what is causing your sensation, you would need to be tested in one of the 12 Rotary Chairs that those top specialists have. It pinpoints the balance or other ear problems by being tested in that chair for a couple of hours. Very specialized testing.

How are you feeling Headein?
I have very similar symptoms to you.
I had to lean my head on the sofa for about 3 months at the start!!
Was a joke! I was being pushed in all directions. Walking was/is like walking on uneven surfaces and steps feel not properly connected to the floor. Quite fighteneing! I use to get an intense pulsating in my head. Take it this is dizziness? When bad i get punished for anything upright! Hate it!

Kelly
