Why won't my ear popping get better????

My whole family is tired of listening to me complain and I even lost a friend because I can't focus on anything but this ear thing that i'm going through! My kids are even suffering. This is so unfair. going on for over 2 months now. The popping and crackling in my right ear and the feeling of fullness is driving me mad. At night the ringing has gotten better and I have a feeling is because I quit cows milk and coffee. But seriously I am tired of so many ent specialist telling me there is nothing wrong with me. Yes there is! I know my ear looks fine. No fluid, no air...i guess they meausred this was some testing they did..passed my hearing test ...a little low on my right ear ...my last diagnos was tmj and the dentist insisted the ear popping and other issues were do to this. No maybe I due clench my teeth at night but that ear popping is not from that it is a congested feeling in my ear. It is for sure coming from my ear. If it was from tmj i would hear a popping sound when I opened my mouth. I have a few mri's scheduled at the end of the month and the doctor told me he probably wont see anything on them ...um then why do it!! I dont' want to deal with this anymore. I can't. No it's not life threatening. But the pressure is bad and I'm scared to fly. I'm scared my child will drop a plate and the sound will hurt my ears. I am tired of swallowing and trying to pop my ears all damn day. I need to hear success stories. What can I do? I started yesterday with trying to pop my ears every hour by pinching my nose and blowing..although this freaks me out I am still doing it. I was told by the last ent specialist that I have to help my eustachian tube that it is a collapsed ..(this is his assumption) oh and that I may have allergies ..I do feel extra stuffy lately at nights..not to bad but a bit plugged. My daughter and son are getting over a cold so that maybe what I am going to experience soon which is making my ears pop even more!! Please help me. Please tell me success stories how you do not have this anymore but did at one point and it is gone. I am so scared that it wont go away.

Hi there,
The doctor is probably right - ETD/ear popping can be caused by TMJ dysfunction. It's not necessarily a bad thing, because once they diagnose you and figure out what to do to treat you (most of the time, you don't need any invasive treatment to get better) then you'll resolve your annoying ear symptoms. Your ear/eustachian tube is closely connected to your jaw joint so any problems with the joint can cause the ear to manifest weird pressure symptoms, like your ears feel stuffy, won't pop etc. Your doctor should be able to rule out allergies beforehand. It's actually a good thing that you're getting evaluated for TMJD. You're a step closer to getting it sorted out.

So all mri's are back and they found some swelling in my nasal area, my allergy tests came back positive for allergy to dust, and I do not have tmj or if i did it's gone. I wear a night guard once a week, face pain is gone. That ear popping is still there! I went to a flower healer today she says it's a device that I have thoughts from my past preventing....I stopped listening. I really think I need to try this ear popper. It's a 200 dollar machine that I need a prescription for. My ent doesn't use these and he is hesitant my ear thing will get worse. Wants to try acid reflux medicine for 2 months? Even though I don't have acid reflux that this sometimes opens tubes...the problem is i'm stil breast feeding and that medication is very srong. oh my.

Re: Why wont my ear popping get better????

Has your ENT discussed the option of putting a PE tube in your ear or doing a myringotomy? Your Eustachian tune is supposed to equalize the pressure on the inside of your body with the atmospheric pressure on the outside of your body. If this is not happening the way it should, it's called Eustachain tube dysfunction, which can cause the pressure and the popping sensation in your ear. Your ENT probably checked this with a test called tympanometry, which is basically a test to check the pressure in your ear, to see if there is any fluid behind the ear drum and to see if the eardrum is moving correctly. I would not waste your time or money on that $200 ear popping machine...in my opinion it is a huge scam to give desperate people false hope.

Re: Why wont my ear popping get better????

It is now 8 months later. And I have not gotten any better. Several MRI's and catscans done. MRI showed some nasal swelling? Catscan was done recently showed negative. ENT insists it's caused from a migraine but this is also the dr that put me on 3 different acid reflux medications. Nothing helped. Tonight I am back to freaking out because I feel pain maybe due to the fact I am catching a cold and have a lot of phlym in my throat making me swallow more making the popping/crackling sound happen a lot more. I can't breathe through my right nostril. It has to be sinus related? Inflamation of some sort? I will go see my 4th ent dr. in 2 weeks. I am now considering surgery.. one ent specialist was very quick to want to do the nasal surgery he said it was like a plunger and it would scrap everything I have but that it may not work??? how promising...This new ent dr i read he uses a different method with no post bleeding from surgery. I hope he cures me. I hate reading so many posts of people with the same problem and not enough people posting back letting "us" know if something worked or if "they" are still struggling with it.

Hello there,
I'm so sorry to hear what you are going threw. I'm here in this boards because my husband have almast the same problems like you for like 10 months and i'm looking for answers/solution/ any advice that can help. The thing that really drives him crazy is the ear fullness and dizzy feeling. He was diagonzed with Chronic Sinusitis and did a FESS surjery last month. We were hoping this will help, but nothing happened. we also thought to buy this Ear Popper machine but our ENT doctor said it's to early because it's been only one month after the surjery and we need to wait. He directed us to wait another month and see an Otologist. I hope everything will pass soon because it's very hard for both of us. Be strong and come back to update.
Lots of health.

Re: Why wont my ear popping get better????

3 weeks ago after the recommendation of the neurologist I went to a physical therapist. ( I have my MRI cervical spinal results on a disc but no doctor yet to read them) This lady almost cured me! I was on day 6 of bad ringing I couldn't stand it, I couldn't sleep! and of course my usuall crackling/popping from my right ear....with just one visit she made my ringing go down my 50% and the crackling/popping went down by 20%. I was so happy, right when I was feeling like this is it there is no cure!! Now she explains it's muscle spasms and pinched nerves and that she's heard of ear crackling/popping and ringing associated with this. Why did the first physical therapist months ago look at me like I was crazy when I asked him if he's ever heard of any links to trauma to the neck or back causing crackling/ringing??? Okay so after the 3rd visit from her I was just so happy. She explained to me it is not a diet thing so cutting out all those foods that I have been (dairy, caffeine) wont help. She stretched me and massaged me so hard in several areas mostly all on my right side which is the side of the issues. No it's not 100percent better not even close but it's enough to give me hope and this is something that should be looked into for those who haven't found a cure. I canceled my sinus surgery just in time. The only problem I have now is that after 3 amazing sessions with this amazing physical therapist (that also gave me stretches to do at home) is leaving out of state!!! Very sad but will keep looking for someone that can help me just like she was and I get my MRI read next week..wondering if it will show anything .....

I know that your post is old but I'm having the same symptoms as you. Did you ever improve from this condition? I'm stressing about it as well and cannot think of anything else. Please help.

Re: Why wont my ear popping get better????

I'm usually highly sceptical about unverifiable health information on the web but was drawn to this thread by precious daily because it described symptoms so similar to mine. "popping and crackling in my right ear and the feeling of fullness". I have the crackling, the feeling of fullness and my right ear doesn't pop completely on swallowing / yawning etc. I don't think mine is as bad as other people here, but its been bothering me for about ten years - ever since I flew when I had a bad cold, and carried on drinking and partying instead of trying to get better. Recommend everyone to take precautions to unblock nose / unstuff head before flying. Mine developed into sinusitis which took about ten days to recover and was incredibly painful. Thankfully that never came back but had these symptons since then. When I got it checked out six or so years ago by an ENT consultant (an excellent Egyptian man in Liverpool) there was nothing out of the ordinary, same result as original poster "passed my hearing test ...a little low on my right ear". I can tell my right ear isn't as good but only marginal. Seeing a lot of people on the web with a similar complaint is actually quite reassuring. Hopefully some of the solutions will work. For me may also be linked to hayfever I developed only in early 30s.

Re: Why wont my ear popping get better????

Late arrival here, but I was just curious on any updates regarding your condition, OP?

I've been having the same problem with my right ear -- popping, crackling, pressure, and pain. I'm constantly blowing to relieve my ear pressure, only for it to pop and IMMEDIATELY close up again. This started 2 years ago for me, and have struggled with it daily. So far, not one doctor has been able to resolve this as of yet for me.

When it first started, there was a large pop that brought on an immense amount of pain, and shortly thereafter began developing the fullness in my ear. I thought I had ruptured my ear drum and had gone to my doctor. They couldn't find a thing wrong with me. The symptoms began to worsen, and I eventually was sent to a specialty hospital to ensure there wasn't something else going on. A CT Scan and MRI later (within 1-2 months of each other), all they found was a bit of inflammation in the nasal cavity from one of the scans. I past all my hearing tests minus the high range (but that's mostly due to my line of work), and I had good pressure in both ears. The right pressure was slightly off, but completely within the norm.

It was after a 2nd visit to the specialty hospital that they diagnosed me with TMJ. I couldn't wrap my brain around the diagnosis. I wasn't having any kind of facial pain. I don't grind my teeth, and I'm not an individual who stresses out very easily.

I was basically told to take Ibuprofen for the inflammation that TMJ causes, as well as a nasal spray, and go from there. Ibuprofen didn't help at all; nor did the spray. In fact, I just continued to worsen as the weeks and months went by.

I finally went to get a second opinion from a local ENT who ran their own tests, and guess what? They were 100% convinced I had ETD (Eustachian Tube Dysfunction) -- that was until they checked out my Eustachian tube and found it to be completely normal. They then agreed with the specialty hospital -- it must be TMJ.

I'm not convinced its TMJ, but I am not a doctor, so I'm trying my hardest to follow their recommendations -- so far no joy. And the pressure, popping, crackling, and ringing is driving me just about crazy.

I'd be interested if anyone has had this problem, and if it was really TMJ, did you find a solution to combat the secondary symptoms, and if so, how?

Thanks, and good luck to the original poster, as well!!
