This sounds very much like Tinitus which can occur as many different sounds and can be in one ear or both.
I have suffered from this for most of my life and yes it will go. Mine will dissapear for months on end and then return sometimes for a reason other times no reason.
Have you had a cold recently or been in contact with very loud noise, even flying will set it of.
Your ENT Dr will confirm if it is Tinitus and unfortunately there is not much treatment for it.
It could of course be some other problem and that's why you are being reffered to ENT.
It is possible you may get an earlier appointment by ringing the ENT dept of your hospital to see if they have a cancelation.
