| Re: Prescription strength pain killer
Did you mean to ask is there something stronger over the counter? If so, there is not to my knowledge. A doctor can prescribe to you Pyridium which is basically a stronger version of azo and cystex, they contain the same active ingredient. They are all known as a 'urinary analgesic', which means it is a numbing agent targeted for the urinary tract, not labeled as a pain killer. Also, I wouldn't suggest trying to match the dose of Pyridium.
There is also another drug that can be prescribed by your doctor called Urogesic Blue. I've taken it a few times over the course of my i.c. diagnosis, and I have found the most relief from it. Urogesic Blue is a urinary antiseptic, urinary acidifier, and antispasmodic combination. It works by helping to kill bacteria in the urine, decreasing inflammation, and reducing muscle spasms in the urinary tract. These actions work together to help relieve discomfort while urinating. It actually helped numb my bladder a little bit, but I'm not sure if I perceived it as numb because of less bladder spasms or not. Best of luck.
