| Re: Newly diagnosed with interstitial cystitis
Hi there,
OK, yes, Amitriptyline (also known as Elavil) is an antidepressant, however, many antidepressants, particularly triptan drugs, are also used for the treatment of chronic pain...and no, it's not because your doctor thinks you're crazy -- it's got something to do with neurotransmitters in the brain, or something like that.
As far as side effects go, it can make you tired, but your body adjusts after a while. When I took it for my IC, I only took it at night, but I did not have severe pain. Those who do might take it throughout the day. My only advice when it comes to Ami is to really watch yourself. If you find that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to urinate, it's time to cut back.
Are you on any other meds, Sunshine?
Be well,
Inq
