Will a Probiotic help IBS?

I was wondering if a good probiotic will help with IBS symptoms? Mainly for me, its feeling and having bloating around my belly button area. It's very uncomfortable. The only thing that relieves it is not eating and that don't work. I do eat yogurt but that doesn't help. If anyone has any tips or if a good probiotic helps I would love to know what works for you. Thanks~

Re: Will a Probiotic help IBS?

Hello MySunnyDaisy,

How are you today? Sorry I do not have the answers you're currently seeking, but I have also been wondering the same thing as you! I keep seeing so many need probiotics popping up on the shelves in the pharmacy now they have them that don't need to be kept in the fridge and the thought keeps crossing my mind. I haven't tried them though due to the price, but I keep forgetting to ask about them!

If I remember, I will ask my doctor today!
Have a great day!
K.

Re: Will a Probiotic help IBS?

From what I've been told by my colo-rectal doctor: probiotics help some people but don't help others. They tend to be expensive so I was also told that if I didn't see a difference in a month, to not bother continuing. He recommended Align (it's the big one a lot of people recommend for IBS). So far, I've found the CVS generic to be cheapest.

While I certainly see a difference in my bloating with the probiotic and it has helped, it does not work as a cure-all for me, but I question if I've been misdiagnosed as a lot of people seem to be relatively okay and not at a point where it is ruling their lives and robbing energy like the Energizer Bunny.

That's my two cents and warning to take my experience with a grain of salt. I do know some people that find it works wonders and then others that finds it makes things oh so much worse. A warning that it could take some time to get used to. I was told to expect excess gas. With the cocktail of meds I am on, Align is an easy once-a-day capsule with no taste so I can take it easily.

Re: Will a Probiotic help IBS?

Hello

I briefly spoke to my doctor about this yesterday and he told me it would be worth trying if I would like to, and just keep a journal of any marked changes in the next month or so of using them to gauge if it is worth while keeping them on board as a daily regime.

Not a great deal of help for you right at the minute, but a positive "worth a go" anyhow

All the best!
K.
