Unhappy salmonella ,food poisioning..could this cause some cases of ibs?

In may of this year, i had food poisioning . I noticed 4 hours after eating an egg salad sandwich from a deli, i got terribly itt....diarreah, severe stomach pains, chills, severe headache and nausea. I went to the doctor the next day and she told me it sounded like food poisoning from the egg salad...since i didn't eat anything after that and 3-4 hours later i got the above symptoms. Needless to say, 2 weeks went by and the\diarreah, and stomach pains did not subside. I went to the emergency room, and they diagnosed the same as my doctor...food poisioning from the eggs. To make a long story short, i truly believe this started all my stomach problems, because since that episode of the food poisioning...i have never felt the same. I think this contributed to my ibs. 2 years prior, i had a colonoscopy test done...negative results and also at the same time i had the esophagus test...negative..except for a slight hiata hernia. Has anyone else experienced the same after some sort of food poisioning or food allergy attack....please comment. thanks

I think alot of triggers can cause you gastrointestinal system to not function like it use to. Food poisoning can cause your intestinal flora to get out of balance and it becomes very difficult to get back to normal.

I have found that you can take a good probiotic supplement that re-colonizes your intestines with friendly bacteria--- certainly helps.

Some good probiotic supplements that I have used are Flora Source, iFlora, PB-8, Primal Defense, Kyodophilus, and Primadophilus with Reuteri. Also, eat a good brand of yogurt daily that has live active culures in it. Kefir is also very good if you can find it.

God Bless---Harry

Harry; What is good for excessive gas...i have noticed now that i am taking the acidophillus supplement (walgreens brand)...i am expericing some excessive gas...also alot after i eat youghurt...which i know you said is good to get our flora back in order. what would you suggest..totake before the acidophillus and yoghurt that won't give me so much gas... Appreciate your response...aslo of all the probiotic supplements you mentioned, which is the less potent to start out with. Thanks

Mary,

When you re-estabish the friend bacteria, the process will kill off the bad bacteria and may cause gas and some bloating as well as pain.

I like all the ones I mentioned but I use PB-8 and Primal Defense mostly. Just take less to begin with. They should be taken on an empty stomach because stomach acid destroys the friendies. I take it at bedtime.

Also, buy a yogurt with the most different types of culture in it. It always takes 2 cultures to make all yogurt and some manufacturers add only 1 and some add 6 additional live active cultures-- the more the better because each culture serves a different purpose in your intestines.

In the US I think Stonyfield Farm is best because it's organic and it contains L. reuteri bacteria a super good re-colonizer that is cultures in Sweden from mother's milk. It is not contained in any other yogurt in the US. I don't know where you live so I can't recommend a certain brand so you'll have to read the labels.

A good link about gas is:

thank you again Harry for your input. I am reading the book "Patient Heal Thyself" by the founder of Primal Defense...Mr.Rubin...and am quite fascinated by it. It makes you stop and think about, how all of us may be abusing our bodies with the prescription medications prescribed to us by the doctors, and our sensitive immune systems that can result from over medication, illnesses, and just our not-so-healthy diets. I really got invovled with homeopathic treatments after My first hand knowledge of what prescription drugs can do to you.....I was only on Liptior for 30 days and already my liver enzymes were elevated.....even so, my doctor said to continue...well I didn't. Also, the salmonella poisioning didn't help my system either. I am now taking milk thistle to supplement my liver and keep it healthy...i think sometimes not all the blame with ibs sufferers is with the colon...i think the liver has a big part in the issue...as it is the liver that digests and breaks down the food also in our digestive tracks....Being a Cemetery Counselor...I work for the Catholic Diocese as a grieving counselor for families who have lost loved ones...you wouldn't believe Harry, the families that have lost loved ones because of overdoes, wrong prescriptions, side effects from prescriptions, surgeries gone wrong...terrible lifestyles (smoking, fat food diets,etc.etc.etc.)...My New Years resolution is to get my digestive system back in order. I am not fat, I workout at the healthclub everyday and at one time I was a semi-bodybuilder. At 50, it's time to get back to where I was. Thanks again
