Terrible Acid Indigestion ... Help !!!! - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Message Board

Dear Friends at Healthboards,
I was woken from my sleep last night choking on my own acid vomit.... It shot up and woke me up fortunately....I managed to make it to the bathroom, but the back of my throat is very sore...
I have had IBS for nearly four years now and have suffered from indigestion before but not this bad...
Does anyone else have this ????
I see my gastroenterologist next week...But I am a tad frightened after last nights experience ..
I have now had this acid all day...
Please please can anyone reccomend something to take, I am currently taking milk of magnesia...

I had this exact same experience not so long ago. Its only happened to me once but I was so frightened, I couldnt go back to sleep incase I chocked again! I had a very sore throat and couldnt stop coughing. At the time I was trying to give up smoking and had been chewing nicotine gum for a few days and thought this was the cause.
I havent suffered indigestion for while now but I used to have it chronic when I was pregnant with my son, and terrible heartburn. Drinking milk helped a lot but its short lived. Have you tried gaviscon etc...doesnt help me, just repeats on me but worth a try.

I've also had this a couple of times in my life....yes it's awful. I take Pantaloc for a hiatus hernia. My stomach aches and I feel nauseated 90% of the time.

Any thoughts on what causes the acid indigestion?

Try orange peel extract capsules for the heartburn. You take one each other day and that stuff works wonders. You can find them in healthstores. But be sure you dont have ulcers as that is its only restriction. Nexium also works nice but to me it gave me diearreah, that happens all the time I take antiacids with magnesium. Good luck

Hi,
I don't know if this will help you, but it worked for me. Are you a coffee drinker? Whether it is caffeinated or decaffeinated, coffee contains something that wreaks havoc on your stomach. I had terrible stomach pains and felt nauseous all of the time also. I stopped drinking coffee less than a week ago and I am feeling soooooo much better already. If you do drink coffee, you might considering stopping for a few days to see if your symptoms improve. Hope you feel better. Been there!
