not gettin meds i feel i need, just anti-dep - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Message Board

note-ibs-d sufferer okay, why do i not get meds like bentyl, or stuff like that, anti-spas. meds, all the doc wants to do is put me on a 6 month course of an anti-dep like zoloft, sure i have had anxiety, but thats not whats causing it, i feel that as soon as you mention whether or not ur anxiety is bad, they feel thats the main culprit w/ me... its not AT ALL.. my diet and the food i eat, causes the most problems, and then i go through the problems, which makes my anxiety bad... my anxiety is not causing my stomach flare ups...... i mean i was given donnatal for a month, but i mean if there was something i could take long term like a few ppl i know do, how can i get them to prescribe it, my gastro doc hasn't..... i mean i've done everything, natural remedies, nutrionist, anti-dep, diet change, and to date, nothing has stopped the problem completely, maybe for a few days or temporarily, so for anyone on meds, what meds are you on... and w/ what i've wrote, what would you recommend me saying to my doc. i guess i can just take down 4 imodium every 2 days, i'm sick of that already

Hi there. I know it's frustrating when the docs just seem to pat us on the head and prescribe anti-depressants for our digestive troubles. However, some people on this board have been helped tremendously with anti-depressants, so maybe it's worth a try. As far as Bentyl, it didn't stop my "D" at all, just made me drowsy with a dry mouth, but I still had to make a run for it with no relief from my diarrhea.

Maybe an increase in fiber (like Metamucil) plus taking Caltrate + D would help "constipate" you and reduce your diarrhea. Unfortunately, there's no cure for IBS-D, but some dietary changes/improvements and reduction in stress can help make symptoms manageable.
