Sphincter out of service - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Message Board

I have had IBS now for several years with severe constipation! I noticed the last couple of years when ever I try to evacuate my bowels my anus, or sphincter muscle will not open up! I do not have hemmorroids!
My question is: Is there anyone with IBS (with constipation) that has had this problem? And is it associated with IBS?
I have to push just to release gas? Is this right?

I have IBS with severe constipation , most of the time. And I seem to have the same problem too. I think it does have something to do with IBS, but I'm not sure. I haven't asked my doctor about it yet. My sphincter muscle seems to tighten up and even close up at times when I try to have BMs.

I have the same thing going on with me, sometimes I try and make myself relax to be able to go, but it never works. It doesn't matter what is coming out (size, substance, and even gas) Even when I was prepping for my colonoscopy and it was nothing more then liquid, I still had to push to get it out. Hopefully someone like harry will respond to this message and give us some ideas as to what we can do to help it.

This is exactly the problem I was haveing...especially at night . I do have a hemhroid and the pain could be intense.I could sit there for an hour before anything would eventually open up and allow passage....slow and painfull.

I did discuss this with my doctor and after listening to what he said I researched more about my diet..... I didnt even realize I had a low fiber / high fat diet.... I decided to make some changes and I have reversed this and honestly it has made a world of difference in my life.... It only took a couple of weeks of this new higher fiber / low fat diet and my suffering subsided..... It's been over six months now and things are very different. Elemination is much easier and that locked up shut sympton has not returned. I can honestly say that for me it has been a huge improvement in my life.

I cant say that everyone would benifit from this as there may be other problems or causes but at least for me a simple diet change did wonders.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like they are are tensing up, instead of relaxing to have a BM. I actually have to close my eyes, blow out my breath slowly to relax myself, run the water, and have the fan on in the bathroom. Sounds strange as I write this, but it's true.
