Red face How many of You are Women who get no relief for their IBS from anything??

I have tried everything for my IBS. My main symptom is gas. If I am lucky enough to go a day without gas, I will get it bad at night. My whole stomache fills up and just to touch my belly is agony. I also just feel a dull burning aching pain my my stomache like it is inflammed and I will be bloated for days until it clears up. I have been tested for everything, a colonoscopy, chrons was ruled out, no allergies, tried Zelnorm, all kinds of antispasmatics, absolutely nothing helps at all. I am starting to think I will just suffer the rest of my life. I can hardly eat half the time and my energy is zero. Sometimes I have explained this to doctors and they think I am just starving myself when they don't understand it is agony to eat sometimes, and since I dont have a diagnoses of something serious like Chrons they just think it is stress related! Does stress cause gas every day?? Come on!!
Are their any other women like me?? I would like to hear your stories.
Thanks Ladies

Hi, I am on Zelnorm but sometimes that seems to not work well. I drink lots of fluids that helps sometimes. Let me see.. Nothing seems to work for long I have found. I have IBS C. I am going to have a colonoscopy next week. Joy joy. I have had alot more pain that I normally do. I normally don't have much and lately ... it has been different. I can relate to the gas. I get bloated alot.
I wish I could help you more. Polly

I am like you too. I have gas all the time. Upper and lower. Sometimes I can't burp and sometimes I can't get rid of it the other way either. I don't really have much pain, but the bloating feeling makes me feel sick and full and I don't get hungry. Let me ask a question. I have posted this before, but never really get much response. Is your bloating a "feeling" of being full and sick or nauseous or a little bit queasy or is it an appearance like your pants get too tight so your stomach actually swells out? Mine is almost always a sick to my stomach feeling, yet I feel like I need to be popped with a pin to let all the air out.

I take phazyme for the gas in my stomach and it helps there, but doesn't help in the colon. I've heard activated charcoal? is good for intestinal gas, but I haven't tried it. I've seen it in the stores, but don't have any.

Another question. Can constipation cause gas to build up in the digestive tract and therefore cause a sick bloated feeling?

Just wondering if anyone else describes their bloating like this.

I also have tried many different medications. I've tried anti-spasmodics, Zelnorn, otc gas medicine, Miralax, & many other natural remedies. My gi doctor recently put me on Miralax once a day, & after a week I have been having much more regular bowel movements. I haven't taken it the past 4 days, but I've still been more regular. She also had me start taking Phazyme 3 times a day for all my trapped gas, & it seems like it is also helping alot. Before, I would take it only when I needed it, but that wasn't cutting it. Unfortunately, it's still a day to day thing, & I never know when it will bother me, but at least it's been more bearable.

To LUVMYBOYS:
Hello! Yes,I always get a sick feeling in my stomache when I bloat up with gas, and I feel I need to stick a pin in me to release it. I have tried charcoal, but It did little for me, and you have to be very careful with it because you can't take it within 2 hours of other med esp. birth control because it can alter their effectiveness. My Dr said Gas in the lower belly is Colonic gas, and hardest to treat, because Phazyme and Gas X and such drugs are for gas in the upper stomache. Somone suggested to be "Bitters." They are in a little jar where the tonic water and the mixed drink (but not the alcohol) stuff is. I like the brand is Angostura. It is flavoring you add to soups and stuff, but It says on the back it has been used for a hundred something years to "increase appetite and treat gas." I don't know, it hasn't done much for me, and then again nothing really has.
Boo Hoo! =)

Re: How many of You are Women who get no relief for their IBS from anything??

Im quite frankly sick and tired of doctors attitude toward ibs like there is nothing that can be done and like there is nothing wrong when we know there is obviously something wrong in our bodies to be like that. I have posted this before but Im going to the alternative of doing liver/gallbladder flushes to recover my intestinal and overall health back. Each day I talk to more people that have experienced the flushings and getting cured of diseases like ibs and such. If you are stoned things are never going to get any better unless you get rid of them. This stones wont appear in your xrays or sonograms because only calcified stones are the ones that show in medical testing. So if you say this to a doctor he will say its all in your heard, and so on. Im excited about doing it myself so Im reading a lot and getting well informed. I will post my experience afterwards.

I'm a guy with IBS and I'm frustrated with the system too

Hi guys,

Has anyone tried hypnosis - I'm just curious - I'm not sure if it is effective or not - there are so many websites that talk about it. But I am skeptical.

Unfortunately, I don't know what to say about the "it's all in your head" diagnosis. My IBS was severe at one point in time. I used to be in bed all day long and used to feel very depressed, fatigued and in pain - to the point where I could barely do anything for myself. I slowly however started inventing a new method (which I was told by those who know yoga is called visualisation in their opinion) which completely irradicated the pain and the bloating and the anal burning and the dizzy spells and the joint pains and the eye twitching.... It is entirely a mind-based technique.

Sorry, I keep strumming the same guitar... I'm just frustrated too. I have no formal method of explaining what I know to be true in my case and so I cannot discuss my methods at a very high level with anyone: So I am stuck suffering from some residual problems until I find a way to solve them myself. I am also bothered that if I author something - someone else seems to start parroting the same thing over the Internet and they don't really understand why or how what I said works - they are just faking the idea that they know. I am very hesitatant to even start describing how to deal with IBS using my invention to anyone because of that.

Well, I hope you guys find a way out of your troubles that you are comfortable with. I know your frustrations with the medical community may one day lead to a cure - and doctors will finally stop saying "it's all in your head - deal with it yourself - we don't even want to hear about your troubles".

- Raju -

Re: How many of You are Women who get no relief for their IBS from anything??

HI

I too am a woman who gets no relief for ibs symptoms. personally , i believe i have endometriosis due to my IBS+MEnstrual disorders+infertility. I believe it is all related, for me anyway. I have tried many things over the years and none has worked consistently. I did go off all wheat, dairy, coffee, alcohol etc. but still found i had some symptoms, though not as severe, and eventually after about 2 weeks seemed to taper off. my symptoms did return upon eating these things again, however, not right away, i had about 2 months of pain free. since i am week willed, i cannot seem to resume this diet again, though i believe it would probably help. i also believe stress can trigger an attack, though i do not buy that it causes the disorder.

one thing i found works 90% of the time, is never letting myself get hungry. that seems to set off spasms just about every time.

one more thing, i am taking evening primrose oil, flax oil supplements(pill form) it really helps keep things regular and moving along and is noticable within 2-3 days of taking it. just got to be consistent.
i wish healing to everyone.

Re: I'm a guy with IBS and I'm frustrated with the system too

Raju,
When you talk about "eye-twitching" what do you actually experience. For a while, i was experiencing my left eyelid "flutter" very subtly and very spasmodically out of my control.

I have been following your posts for quite some time and you and I have symptoms the most alike out of any of the posters I've read.

You said that a cousin tried Calcuim. Ever since that day, I started taking four Calcium supplements, Metamucil, and acidophilus daily. It worked on and off at first, but after a stressor in my life passed (school) somewhat, I have returned to having almost perfect BMs at most 3 times a day. I almost never have the urge to go as urgently as I used to. So I guess that is progress.

Although I still have awful gas and now I get these cramps that aren't excrutiating, but just bad enough to interfere with my once-active life...

In a way I really thank God it hasn't gotten worse, because I am just about the end of my rope. What is happening to me now isn't as bad as it used to be, but I'm still not "normal" and I get depressed thinking about being this way for the rest of my life...

Re: How many of You are Women who get no relief for their IBS from anything??

Hi Ibsux,

I had a flutter of my eye that would be out of control similar to yours. I've suffered from a lot of stuff though. I could list them, but only to later realize that I forgot something that happened to me.

There is so much that I would like to write Ibsux, about my conflict with IBS, I just wouldn't know where to start or where it would end. The truth is I don't suffer much anymore. My website is really not that great: my apologies to you Ibsux. It is people like you who make it a joy to write stuff like that. While I've written plenty about diets, and pills etc... they are not the real meat of the website. They are just bones for people who cannot believe that there is a solution that instead of heading to a doctor, they need to concentrate on mind-based techniques to solve their problems. (I am not trying to insult anyone here by saying this. There is a very wise saying in South India where my parents hail from: Let those who have ears hear it, and let those who don't have ears experience it. It means: those who want to listen may and those who don't want to listen don't have to).

So, the calcium supplements and the metamucil and the acidophilus, and the vitamins, and the bile salts are all just small fixes to the big problem. It is much like trying to put a small bandade on a cut the size of your forehead. The small bandade helps every little bit for someone who is unaware of how to help the rest of the cut heal.

I guess the only barriers to freedom from IBS for those who suffer from IBS in a way that I would be able to help them free themselves are two: 1. I have to work on an explanation that is palatable for everyone who wishes to understand and 2. I have to work on a way to author the solution without losing authority over the solution. Yes, I am looking for some greatness out of this: Otherwise, why would I be motivated to do this? Humanitarian causes got thrown out the window when I saw what happened. Humans took over the race to try and explain why my ideas work and they are busy trying to take credit for something that I recently told them. Two years ago, when I called it meditation, there was no knowledge of the mind-gut link and there was no knowledge that meditation helps reduce IBS suffering. Now you can look anywhere on the Internet, and anyone who is anyone who talks about IBS, will not go without mentioning the word meditation. It turns out I was wrong though. It isn't meditation that I did, it is visualisation - man am I glad for that goof-up. Everyone is going around trying to invent theories about meditation and they are trying to teach meditation all over the place too.

Well, Ibsux, I guess the ball is in my court. I've got to do something... I just don't know what or how. Don't yet have a book out on this - maybe thats what I should do? It is a very involved theory and practicing it is something akin to skating - you fall for what seems like forever and then you learn it and it never ever goes away thereafter. Took me years, and someone else might take months.

As for what people should do: I guess the small bandades will have to do for now, until I find a way to deal with my dilemma.

Sorry for the long post. I just like to vent. By the way: Ibsux: I take it you've read my homepage. Its not accurate by my current knowledge, but it does do a lot to try and explain things. Do you still suffer from fluttering of your eyes? Do you know if the gas you are experiencing, is gas in your stomach or is it intestinal gas? I hope that one day I will be able to share with people the things that helped me in a very step-by-step fashion. Perhaps this is what people badly need to cure themselves of this disorder.

Cheers, Raju.

Talking Re: How many of You are Women who get no relief for their IBS from anything??

the best thing i ever did for my irritable bowel syndrome was to stop eating sugars, wheat products, pasta and white bread. This took 90% of my symptoms away including the gas and diarhhoea.

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up Re: How many of You are Women who get no relief for their IBS from anything??

undefinedundefinedundefinedA few notes especially for Women only-- Hormonal changes during your cycle can aggrivate IBS... and regulating it via hormones SOMETIMES helps slightly... And DAILY (religiously) fiber therapy helps quite a bit-- BUT can actually aggrivate symptoms for the first week or so...
I have had some success with hypnotherapy, BUT: it is an on-going treatment-- not a one-time-only thing. Check with your local Hypnotherapy association for Licenced and approved therapists! This treatment has been studied at some legnth, and IS shown to actually STOP IBS in SOME patients!

I used to have terrible acid reflux..and the best thing I ever did to treat that was get on Birth control pills. When I got my period my hormones went wacko and the burning in my stomache and throat never stopped. Sadly, they have done nothing for my IBS...

Re: How many of You are Women who get no relief for their IBS from anything??

Just reading your post and wondering what other testing you've had done? I notice you've had colonoscopy and Crohns has been ruled out but some of what I hear I am also seeing a lot of on Lupus boards and Fibromyalgia boards as well. I myself am trying to determine just what it is that is wrong with me. There is an ANA blood test which can help determine if you have an autoimmune disorder or not. Also one thing you may want to consider, switch doctors!! When I was first diagnosed with IBS a year ago, my doc put me on Zelnorm which didn't help and pretty much told me to use fiber, exercise regularly, and deal with it. A year later I lead a very healthy lifestyle and continue to have bowel problems (especially constipation but I also have diarrhea). I also have joint pain, nausea, pain in my URQ (I have no gallbladder) and LLQ as well as left sided back pain during a flare up. I went to a new PCP who is actually doing some testing to rule some of these other disorders out. He told me IBS is an exclusionary disease, you have to exclude everything else with related symptoms that it could possibly be first before you can definetely say it's IBS. I wish you well and hope the best for all of you.
