Angry End of My Rope

It's official. I will be going to see the Dr. Wednesday.

I've tried everything on these boards: relaxation, acidophilus, calcium, psyllium, Fibercon. They all help a little. But still nothing close to normal functioning. ibs is destroying my life.

My daily experience:
In the morning, first thing, I have a normal BM. After breakfast (always oatmeal with 2 Metamucil, 2 Calcium), I have to make a BM within two hours of ingestion—this is usually looser in consistency that the first. Gas slowly builds up until lunchtime. After lunch (2 more Metamucil, 2 acidophilus) I have to make a BM within 1 hour of ingestion. I am usually under great GI discomfort (mild cramping, the feeling that I have go...). On a lucky day, that will be the end of it. On my worse days, I will have watery BMs 2 to 3 more times for the next 2-3 hrs. Then, for the late afternoon, I will experience a huge amount of gas which, if I hold it in, will be very, very painful. I will have dinner (with 2 more calcium) and have gas until about an hour after eating, and then...It will be my favorite time of the day, the evening, where I will feel the most like myself again. Then I dread going to bed and start the process all over again the next day.

I'm fed up with it, I'm ready to bring out the big guns. Someone on here once said they used some sort of low-level antidepressant. If anyone knows what it is, please let me know so that I can ask my doctor for a scrip ASAP.

Re: End of My Rope

First of all metamucil, acidophilus gives me diarreah in fact I bet the calcium gives me diearreah too. I would be the whole day in the toilet with your routine.

Just eat normal diet, forget the metamucils and crap and yeah get some antidepressant. I took remeron (mirtazapine) and it worked wonders. I dont have attacks anymore. Drink ginger tea it helps a lot. Do exercise! I have been having the stomach noises and I tell I have been riding bicycle on weekend and dont get the gurgles the rest of the week!

Re: End of My Rope

Ten years ago I was at the end of my rope. I went to the doctor and was put thru many tests. I had a sigmoidoscopy -a colonoscopy and the tube down my throat. This was to rule out anything else. It did. That is when the Dr. diagnosed me with IBS with diarreah.
He told me to drink a tablespoon of "Konsyl-D" mixed with water after dinner. He said it would take about a month but that I should see a difference. He also told me to stay away from caffeine and chocolate and fatty foods. I did. and it did work. It made an unbelievable difference. I went from running to the bathroom immediately after each meal to only going after breakfast. It was wonderful.

I say "was" because I eventually thought I didn't need to do this anymore and so I stopped drinking the Konsyl-D and little by little I ended up right back where I started. So I am back drinking the Konsyl-D. It is still too soon to tell but I do hope it works like before.

Oh, and the doctor told me not to use Metamucil he specifically told me to use Konsyl-D. Now it is pretty nasty tasting so I bought the orange flavor. You might have to order from the pharmacist because they don't carry the orange flavor. You can also order it online. Konsyl has its own web page. I hope this helps.

Re: End of My Rope

i looked at konsyl and that's a laxative...just a fiber stuff equivalent to metamucil. That would give me dierreah too.

Re: End of My Rope

I am not familiar with the specific carb diet, do you care to elaborate? The last time I remember being "normal" was about 7-8 months ago...

Thanks, everyone for the kind advice. Good luck to all of you as well

Re: End of My Rope

It is explained in the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet
by Elaine Gloria Gottschall. It eliminates certain food and seems to help many people with chronic digestive problems. You can check out all the reviews on Amazon. It is fairly strict, but it seems many have good results with it.

Re: End of My Rope

I'm sorry you're having trouble. You're right in going to the doctor! But I'm reading your daily routine especially seeing all the stuff you use especially metamucil thinking, no wonder you're having so much diarrhea and gas. If I were you I'd lay off the supplements for a while to find out what your body experiences naturally. Then consume a high fiber, low fat, healthy balanced diet and practice regular exercise. Then I would get back with your doctor about using supplements/medications to help your symptoms. You may be overwhelming your system and compounding your digestive problems when all you're trying to do is help.

Re: End of My Rope

Hi IBsux,

I dunno any antidepressants - never had to take any myself - I've heard of 10mg elavil. Don't know what it is - I think its an antidepressant.

Anywho, I just thought I'd let you know... As we speak I am busy trying to put together material for a rough book on how to deal with IBS from my perspective. Wish me luck. Oh, and hope everything works out for you.

Cheers, Raju.

Re: End of My Rope

Just thought I would give my point of view.......I am 25 and have been SUFFERING with ibs c-d for a long time, have always had stomach problems. I had a colonoscopy finally that proved spastic colon. I have completly changed my eating habits, No more alcohol, no sweets(unless special occasion like my b-day). I have tried supplements including konsyl. I am now taking a digestive enzyme called isotonix....You can only get it certain places, My chiropractor is really into natural stuff. I also take a probiotic and I am going to start taking an antioxidant from isotonix and a vitamin. It has been working good! I am not getting as bloated or gassy! You have to work on your inside. Taking antibiotics( I have all my life) even for a simple cold screw your stomach up. Starting a anti oxidant works well to to free your body of impurities. I know this may sound weird to some but, I wish I would of tried these methods a long time ago! Everyone looks for that one magic pill and have yet to find it. I have anti spasmotic pills from my doc and I am also on an antidepressant and it hasn't done jack! Helped my anxiety though. I wish you all well and hope you find something to releive your pain, Sometimes I feel like I am going to die, I know how bad it is!! just hang in there!!!!!

Carly
Hope we all get through this

Re: End of My Rope

What kind of calcium are you taking????? I CAN NOT tolerate calcium carbonate which is what a lot of calcium pills are, gives me HOBBIBLE gas. Try calcium pills made from Oyster shells. This helped me alot.
good luck

Re: End of My Rope

I thought for a long time I had IBS. My dr told me there was nothing that they could do for me and there was nothing that they could find wrong with me. That was 7 years ago. I finally found a good specialist who suggested that I be tested for Fructose Intolerance and it turns out that is the cause of all of my problems. My family practice dr had me taking fiber pills several times a day as well and that was only making things worse. So now that I have cut sugar out of my diet, my life is totally different. No more headaches, fatigue or diarreah. It may not be your answer, but I would definitly say that it is worth a shot to look into.

Re: End of My Rope

I am not on any specific diet but maybe should be....there are those days when you just wanna die--I've had times when I get up and plan to be ready by a certain time--and then nooo it doesn't work, as I'm on the toilet for hours and hours in agony. Also, i've been keeping a food diary to help with my weight loss goals but also to see what foods trigger me running to the toilet or hurting. I , too get bad gas like you have described and I don't know why!! Yet, I also don't know what foods, if any, I'm allergic to so it's hard to make wise choices w/ what you eat sometimes. You have to be careful. Also, I hear that drinking a lot of water can help but w/ me it usualy will just make me pee and I only am relieved of the constipation when I drink like a pint of water in under 5 mins....also not fun....
