Question Frustrated with constant LLQ pain

Hi! I'm new to this board and am hoping to find answers to some of my questions.

I'm a 34 year old woman who's been struggling with abdominal pain for what seems like forever... The pain is almost always located in my left lower side and intensifies whenever I have a bowel movement or urinate or even ride a bike. It varies between a constant burning or stabbing pain and sometimes will radiate down my leg or in my lower back. I experience alot of bloating and constipation even though I drink alot of water and eat veggies, fruit and other high fiber foods. Sometimes, I get severe cramps and diarhea with mucous, sweating and nausea. (I call them PRAYER CRAMPS because they are so bad all you can do is sit on the toilet and PRAY to God that they go away soon!) It's been so difficult to have this problem properly diagnosed. Just when I thought I was finally getting somewhere (had a barium enema done) my family doctor decided to retire. That was in 2002. I just went to see a new doctor yesterday and she said to me "Drink prune juice". Puhleeze!!!! It isn't that simple! It really bothers me when doctors are so nonchalant about this kind of stuff. I have a history or recurring ovarian cysts and was also diagnosed with IBS and diverticulitis. I may also have endometriosis. Was also told back in 1991 that I had colon polyps when I experienced profuse bleeding from my rectum and had a colonoscopy done. I abused laxatives for a long time (I've been in recovery from eating disorders since 2001) and suspect that this abuse has something to do with my bowel problems. My mother has colitis and her mother had it too.

Does anyone have any suggestions/advice as to how to go about getting this problem properly diagnosed and treated?

Thank you! I'm grateful to have found this board...

Re: Frustrated with constant LLQ pain

I just want you to know that you are not alone. I have IBS and it is a nightmare. I had a colonoscopy in 1999 and was told that I had IBS but I also get alot of bloating and D. I did have alot of blood in 1999 and that scared me and I had a colonscopy in 1999. I haven't had blood since then. I am on Levsin and it was given to me by my family doctor. It helps the spasms and makes them relax. A couple times I had to get Cipro and that helped but it doesn't help everytime. If I can't control it I always go to my doctor. I did go to a specialist once and he didn't help too much he thought my problem was minor compared to other people but it isn't because I suffer alot and can't find the right food to eat. Aot of foods don't agree with me. But for the most part I will say Levsin has helped if taken right away and you have to drink alot of fluids. I have started drinking gatorade to see if that helps. My pain is also on the left side. I hope I helped you a little and I am new also to the boards and It helps to see there is other people going through the same thing.Try to find a doctor that works with you. Good Luck!

Re: Frustrated with constant LLQ pain

Sounds more like abdominal adhesions to me. Check out the website for the International Adhesion Society. Their website has tons of information. I don't know if we are allowed to post website addresses, so I won't, but they are easy to find using google.

I suffer from Adhesion Related Disease (ARD) and it sounds very similar to your symptoms. Good luck. This is not a disorder that has easy answers.
