i'mmmm scared... i wasn't so scared until i started reading about the pain that some people experience.... mannnn i had the sigmoid one but this is the wholllllle thing, and i'm really really scared now!! ease my worries people.. those who have had it tell me its not that bad...
The last one i had at the beginning of the year wasn't bad at all. Just a little discomfort. I did have one that the air (gas) that remained was very uncomfortable. I just found the procedure itself was mentally uncomfortable. They will give you something to sedate you during the test. I did alot of walking sitting on the potty and moving around to help pass the gas. I found the prep the hardest to do. Hope this helps some. Good luck and don't get get all worked up. You will be ok. ITS NOT THAT BAD! LOL
Its Not that bad!!! I had both the colonoscopy, and the endoscopy, and felt no pain whatsoever. I am the biggest chicken in the world. Countrygal is right, the worst part is preping for the test. They give you what they call concious sedation. You are awake, but dont know it. Good Luck, and i am sure it will be fine! catlover
thanks for the replies.. that eases my mind.. i know most people say its nothing but just the fact that some people say it hurts and one girl said the pain woke her up.. i began to become a little worried.. i mean whatever i gotta do... i'll do... the prep. the day b4 is going to be weird.. haha i don't know about the whole laxative thing... why models and people who are trying to lose weight would even think about using laxatives is beyond me!! i would rather take 50 immodium ad at once and not go for 2 weeks than go 50 times in 2 hours....
Try not to worry - I'm in the same boat. I am having my colonoscopy on September 15th. I worked for a gastroenterologist for 6 years so I know a lot about the tests. I was given my choice of a barium enema and a flex. sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy and I chose the latter. I know that the flex. sigs are much more uncomfortable (no sedation). I have had many patients say they don't even remember the procedure. I know I will be more nervous the closer I get to it, but I really don't think it's going to be that bad. The prep will be the worst part.
Don't be scared. I had one a few years ago and it was a piece of cake because they put you in a twilight sleep. Just be sure that it is a full colonoscopy and not the half one, I think it's called a sigmoidoscopy. My mother had that one and it was painful because they don't put you out. Good luck!
I try not to think about how its going to be once I get there. I focus on the fact that I don't know what its like, till it happens. Its not that big a deal - went there like I was taking a walk in the park, and then it was over before I knew it started.
For me, the pain couldn't have been an issue. It was just getting there, so I could have it done - I really needed the clarity that having one of those things done would give me afterwards. IBS is a bigger pain in the butt to deal with than that could ever be.
Well, I hope you benefit from the colonoscopy - let us know how things work out.
I had colonoscopy and nobody is more afraid of this test than me, and I must admit the test was nothing I think the worst part was the prep the night before, but the test, nothing you will not even know it.
Good Luck Cookie
I have had (2) already and the worst part is the prepping the night before. The stuff you take flushes your system out. For the procedure itself, both times I went to a specialist who gave me "valium and demoral". I slept through the whole thing and never felt anything. Even when I woke up there was absolutley no pain. I swear that both times they didn't do it. There was not even an ounce of discomfort. I hope this helps.
I had one done too. I am one of the few that woke up in the middle of it and it was horrible, but it was for only a second because when they realised I woke up they drugged me more. When it was over there was very little discomfort except for the Gas. It took me 3 days to finally get the gas out LOL! Like everyone else is saying though, the worse part is the laxative the night before, not the being cleaned out bit, but drinking the stuff. t was so yucky. Supposedly it tasted like Ginger. Ha!! No way was that a ginger ale!!! It is somewhat fizzy too. But really it was not a bad experience. I woke up because I have a VERY high tolerance to the drugs and with my height you would think it would have knocked me out but good, but no. My tolerance is too high. If you have a high tolerance or are on opoids, remember to let them know abd they will keep an eye on it so you don't wake up. I was spitting mad though because my MD and the nurse refused to believe I woke up. But the ones doing it knew. All they had to do was read the records and it will say I woke up LOL!Duh! I heard them say...good God she's waking up..that was it and I was out again!
good Luck and Don't worry yourself too much. Its no fun but I can think of many worse things!
Kovena
well hey everyone.. i start my prep. now.... 4 ducalax(sp?) pills.. then 255 mg of miralax into 64 oz of clear gatorade.. haha should have started 6 minutes ago.. but i'm nervous.. just thought i'd read the replies one more time, which i am very much appreciative of.. thanks so much everyone, i'll let you know how everything goes...
also i'm supposed to take 255 gm of miralax... is that the whole contents of the bottle.. is says 255 but i don't know if it is.... thanks a lot.... lata
My husband had a colonoscopy about 2 weeks ago. No problems. His only discomfort was the prep. As can be expected for someone with IBS, the laxative worked a little too well.
started the prep at 3... w/ 4 lax. pills.. then at 5 with miralax.... whoever said i would go to the br like no other time in my life is right... this is crazy!! i actually have to right now so i gotta hurry.... yikes! but its not AS bad as i thought it would be.... tomorrows the day... i'll post results after the procedure.. thanks again everyone.
You are going to be mad at yourself for wasting all that time worrying. I recently went and I know what you are going through, I fretted for weeks. The procedure truly was nothing, I had NO pain whatsoever. The prep however is the pain, a friend recently told me she asked the doctor for pills instead of the liquid and made out fine with that. The results are the same and you don't have to drink that nasty stuff. You would think by now they would have something that tastes good.
Seriously, you will be fine with this procedure. As scared as I was, I would have it done again now that I know there was no pain involved.
thanks for the replies.. procedure is today... bout an hour drive... i leave for it in less than 2 hours to check in at 11:45, procedure is scheduled for 1:30... still just bright yellow watery stuff i'm evacuating..... obviously the laxative... i wish i woulda asked typically how long these type of laxatives stay in your system... how long before i can expect my stool to have any substance whatsoever?? well again thanks for the replies and i'll message ya either later tonight or tomorrow on how everything played out.... again i'm gettin this procedure because my doctor possibly will put me on lotronex, however i do not know if i want to risk the side effects.. so i may just keep on fighting the good fight w/ diet and vitamins.... take it easy everyone..
