Fiber a Culprit?

Too much fiber, apples, salad, fiber supplements all seem to make me just more bloated and constipated. Does that make any sense?

Yes, that makes sense. It is best to incorporate fiber in small amounts at first and then gradually increase amount as the body adjusts. Always drink plenty of water.

Re: Fiber a Culprit?

Great question! I've recently wondered if I'm ingesting too much fiber. I was on vacation recently and was eating a diet fairly low in fiber (and was concerned), although my system seemed to be working well. I returned home to my normally high fiber diet and I've been in agony.

Fiber makes thing much worse for me. Have you checked out the book "Breaking the Vicious Cycle - Intestinal Health Through Diet" by Elaine Gottschall. It explains why. The specific carbohydrate diet has pretty much eliminated my IBS.

Re: Fiber a Culprit?

Thanks for the responses! I have been away for a few days with my mother having an emergency hospitalization to have 2 more gallstones removed that were still plugging her bile duct from her gallbladder removal 2 weeks ago. i'm thinking that the stress of everything has made the constipation worse. I have put on 3 pounds in the last, what seems like, just five days or so. (My diet was very high in fiber last week)I'm completely bloated and sick at my stomach. Have any of you used acidophillus to help with ibs and does it work?

Re: Fiber a Culprit?

I alway take a water soluble fiber supplement twice daily along with a high fiber diet. I just don't eat enough of the kind of fiber that absorbs water and with fruits and veggies I get too loose BMs.

And I eat yogurt at least twice daily along with several probiotic supplements to keep the friendly flora right so I don't get any bloating.
