Sometimes I have a loss of appetite but I'm not sure if it's a lack of appetite or simply me not wanting to eat in order to not have to deal with the symptoms.
I too have had a loss of appetite...i'm not sure if I have IBS, but my doctor thinks I do...I'm getting a further diagnosis on the 22. Back to eating, as the symptoms got worse my appetite shrank mostly because I did not want to deal with going to the bathroom. I love food and in the past I could eat a horse, now I eat a salad and maybe some bread, and that messes me up even. So sad not to enjoy food.
I have noticed a huge decline in appetite with this IBS. I want to say that i think it more of the fact that eating tears my stomach up. I have cut so many wounderful things from my diet and trying to eat a lot better.
Loss of appetite and weight loss is a very common occurence with IBS--I can drop down 15 pounds in very short time, if my IBS is really bad and prolonged. But, I can also gain back the weight, when the symptoms are only minor--which happens from time to time. Have you tried protein shakes instead of meals if you don't feel like eating? Also, protein bars, such as "Luna" bars seem to be safe for most IBS folks.

lost of appetite? bingo! haven't wanted to eat nearly as much ever since the symptoms started worsening. it's sad really..when once you enjoyed eating..to now, eating mostly out of necessity. my stomach is way too sensitive to many things now. i have to really watch what i eat... anything with gravy/sauce (esp. rich), greasy foods (onion rings, fries).. can cause me agony for awhile.
Within the past couple of months (I have had IBS for about 13 yrs, diagnosed 7) I can not eat- it disgusts me. I have went down four sizes in clothes. Nothing seems to help. I use to love to eat, but I don't know what the problem may be. I am really confused as to why I have been losing so much weight! My tummy bloats up to several inches and makes me look about 6 mos pregnant (people actually have asked me when the baby is due!), lately it hasn't been that bad though- only good thing! I don't mind the comments about perhaps being pregnant- I don't like the rapid weight loss. It has happened to me before and I gained twice the amount of weight I lost back!
YES!!!! I get very very bad bloating and gas from my IBS flare ups and I will go without eating for days if my fiance doesn't make me eat something light every now and then.

I also was very distended and looked pregnant!! I completely lost my appetite, and even when I made myself eat, could only get down a few bites in one sitting... but miraculously I GAINED weight. I went from 112 to 126 lbs in about three weeks!! but I was VERY constipated the entire time as well.

I have not seen this symptom talked about by anyone.
Yes I have had a loss of appetite.
I havent had a real hunger pain since 1999.
Its like my stomach has undergone some kind of permanent physical change
since the onset of my IBS symptoms in 1999.
The onset in 1999 came on like a stomach virus.
I don’t ever feel like my stomach is truly empty.
I tend to feel bloated with a sense of fullness most of the time.
I can only think of 1 positive thing about having IBS and that is
that I will never ever have to worry about becoming overweight.
IBS stops you from eating too much and it keeps you slim.
Other than that it sucks
I was diagnosed with:
1. IBS - C (based on symptoms and tests ruling out other possibilities)
2. Hiatel Hernia (based on endoscopy)
3. GallBladder not working properly 14% ejection (based on Hida Scan w/cck)
My symptoms are:
Episodes lasting 2 or more weeks/20 episodes in a year
1. Constant extreme stomach gas only (belching)
2. Feeling of stomach fullness all day
3. Constant nausea
4. Constant pressure/soreness directly below the sternum
5. Normal bowel movements (once a day).
Occasional symptom
6. Occasional Quick sharp horizontal shooting pains around upper abdominal area
I had IBS-D symptoms for about 2 ½ years with no weight loss. Then last April I had a really bad flare-up. For about 2 wks I was nauseous, could barely eat half a meal, woke up every morning at 3am and had to have a bm (I usually sleep straight thru the night), and lost about 10 lbs. Then I got a bit better and gained back five pounds. Then I went on vacation and because I was afraid to eat anything that might upset my stomach, I lost another 10lbs. When I came home I gained back about five. Bottom line is that now I am about 10lbs lighter than I was this time last year. But if I miss a meal, I will easily drop about three pounds.
My appetite is there, but I’m afraid to eat too much for fear that symptoms will start. I get full before I finish my meals, but then I’m hungry after an hour or two and have to eat a snack.
Everything I have read about IBS says that weight loss isn’t a symptom. I beg to differ.
