i dont understand why everyone is focussing on diet. This is so frustrating. There is a medically proven brain-gut connection. You digestive system is controlled by your nervous system. Im willing to bet that a LARGE number of you IBS-ers are also stressed individuals, or participate in stressful activity or lifestyle.
All these theories about fiber soluble vs insuluble, and fruits and diet, and new medications have been argued over for years. You cant live the rest of your life waiting for that "new medication".
Hint: Look into the brain-gut connection. Learn about Hypnotherapy.
If no one has said this before "Welcome to Healthboards". I remember when I first came on a health bulletin board. It was a strange experience to say the least. I didn't really understand the culture behind bulletin boards. I was therefore in your situation. Maybe it is coincidental, but I started a huge declaration of my beliefs on the boards and needless to say - some people were peeved by it.
I realize that you've probably stumbled across something big - but you will have to take your time to share things here. It is as you have said - people may have found their own ways of dealing with their problems, and partially as Harry has mentioned - that not all people fit the same description.
If you look around - I've been here for approximately three years - and I've come up with a number of visual techniques which help some and not others. The basis of my visual techniques is the basis of the hypnotherapy - the brain gut-connection. But if you also look around you will find that I've explained why hypnotherapy might work - yet not permanently.
Therefore also, the need to use diet as another tool to assist the recovery. While I totally agree with you when you say that diet is not the primary problem in IBS (and some may agree as well); Still, it can't hurt to eat a healthy diet - it might improve your fighting chances (if you don't understand how - read my posts from the past).
In either case: your chances of helping others on the board may be improved if you watch the culture and figure out how to blend in without rocking the boat too much.
If, on the other hand you wish to discuss visual techniques - I would be more than happy to do so.
I'm glad you found something that's working for you for now. I've heard it has worked for others also. I needed to let you know though that hypnptherapy is not safe for everyone. It can actually be dangerous though it is safe for most.
I also wanted to point something out...this is a mind/gut problem. The gut is 50% of the equation. That's why we look at diet.
I've had IBS-C for 6 years and tried "all the above" and had all of the tests done without anything serious found. About 8 months ago my GI doc put me on Flagyl for 3 weeks. This improved my constipation greatly but I still had pain and bloating. I continued with probiotics and citrucel after the antibiotic treatment and I've been much better ever since. I've also bought and have been using the self-hypnosis, "audio 100" cd mentioned above. It has further improved my condition to where IBS is not dominating and controlling my life anymore. I still have some bad moments but they happen much more infrequently. I'm 50 days into the program and I've been presently surprised by it. If nothing else, the CD's make you feel incredible relaxed and help with stress. That's my story, I know IBS is different for everyone but it helps to here other people's success stories.
can you tell me more about that please? My doc suggested hypnotherapy and I have had 7 sessions plus I also listen to the CD at home daily. It does make me calm but it had not helped with my ibs symptoms to any level. 7 months now. Please comment
Anachron, I have had IBS for about as long as yourself.. about 7 months or so now. In that time i have had only one real period of feeling remotely better from the IBS and that was over the last week (till a few days ago). The reason my IBS has returned and worsened is because i had Flu but nonetheless it was geting better.
Im not saying that the hypnotherapy tape will definately work but the way i look at it is this. I personally do not believe in my case that IBS is an illness. I am not diseased or sick. I persnally believe that i am damaged or injured if you like. As soon as i took this view i was able to help myself a lot more. I wasnt looking for medication that will simply cure me, i started simply looking into what could help repair myself. Now with any injury it takes time. My IBS is pretty severe so i compare it to a severe injury and a severe injury will not be fixed in a week. It has taken months of trying new and different things but I am basically focussing on my energy levels and just helping my digestive system. The reason i am focussing on my energy levels is because, and i imagine the same will be for yourself, i am virtually suffering from exhaustion . The food i can manage to eat i dont diegest properly so i dont get the required nutrients etc from it stopping myself from having the required energy to heal myself. So at the moment I drink chinese herbs specifically for the bodys energy levels and the acupuncture i have is used for pain and stress (they stopped focussing on making my digestive system work which they used to do.. giving me 36 hours relief maybe). The effects have been good so far. I have felt better and my IBS was improving until i caught Flu which has put me back to square one but i intend to start again.
Bottom line after all the waffle. Give the hypnotherapy a chance.. you have had IBS for 7 months... realistically (illness or injury) it will take several months to recover from something like that.
With all the time i have had off i have watched lots of films one of the most recent being the new Batman and it had a nice quote in it... "Why do we fall down master Wayne?" ... "So we can learn to pick ourselves up!"
Now the flu is going i keep saying that to myself lol.. cheesy eh?

Harry, where do you get Culturelle? I've read a little about probiotics but where do I get them? Health Food Store? Is Culturelle a brand name? Pill form or something else? I would love to try to rid myself of the ridiculous gassiness and bloat, not to mention pains, that have been plaguing me more and more as I get older -- both before and after gall bladder removal. The missing GB has done little to cure my other digestive complaints and I knew that would be the case...
Listen to this: many people my age (50+ women) are agreeing when we talk about this fun little topic that these digestive problems, including excess gas, seem to be increasing dramatically with age, especially since, say, age 45 or so. What's your take on that? Have you heard anything similar?
I do know that we tend to tolerate less and less as time goes on, especially things like dairy, but soon some of us will feel there is nothing out there we can eat and still feel good. Thanks for any response you might care to make. I would LOVE to hear more about probiotics.

And the shelf life of a Twinkie is 18 years!!
Thanks so much for the great info on Culturelle and explanation about how these probiotics work. It appears to me that the longer we live the greater would be our need for additives to counteract all the damage we've done to ourselves over the years, both preventable and unpreventable.
