Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some help here. I've had IBS since I was very young. I had a colonoscopy a few years ago and my doc said there was nothing "physically" wrong, but when he introduced the air I spamsed up so bad I woke up and they have had to give me more meds (which I remember). He said my system was just "hypersenstive". I've tried everything I can think of. He had me on some anticholningergics but they didn't help and actually made me feel "dumb". I couldn't concentrate on anything or even think straight. So he took me off because they weren't helping at all. I tried changing my diet, but I only found out what makes it worse, but nothing actually makes it "better". I know if I eat certain things I'm doomed, but if I don't eat them I may or may not cramp up. I tried fiber, but that only helps if I take it habitually. But after a while it makes my stool hard, so I cut back on it, which brings back pain and loose stool. If I take pepto about an hour before a very nerve-racking or stressful thing (ie public speech, new day at school/work) it helps, but I can't go around taking that every day. It's worse in the morning and much worse in the morning in a car. A lot of times if I'm sitting in traffic and start getting cramps. That makes me nervous because I know I can't get to a bathroom so I actually start having "mini" panic attacks. My hands get all sweaty, I get dizzy and start breathing fast, which makes my stomach cramp more. I've gotten a little better at controling them now. The newest thing is the fissures. I had one and it went away, but now I think I have another one (or it's the same one and it's become chronic). I was wondering if anyone has found anything that helps. I feel like I want to screem sometimes! Is there anything I missed that could help?
Hmmm sounds like IBS to me, but it seems your dr could get more tests in. I don't know I wish I had more suggestions, I just feel bad no one replying to this and all...one thing about controlling pain is you can try meditation or just closing your eyes and breathing...I had it bad the last few days myself and at one point I just cramped in a ball for about 6 mins straight...I could not stop going, too, it was D, but mine alternates between D and C and I wonder if I am having something more serious to IBS, after all colon cancer has been found in a few members of both sides of my family and all 4 of my Grandparents, one had the cancer we think at least, the others all suffered bowel issues!! Anyway, If your dr isn't receptive to testing you more, maybe find another? I don't have a gastro specialist, but I know I need one, I just don't have the funds for that right now. I try to control it w/ a "healthy" diet, as they say fats and sugars can make it worse and I find a lot of carbonated drinks make it worse too at least w/ the constant need to go...it is interesting you mentioned the car though, every time and I mean literally almost EVERY time I get into a moving vehicle, and if I'm driving it's worse, I need to go immediately!!! I hate that!! I can have had nothing for breakfast and be constipated, BUT if I get in that car and start moving then I am having to run to the restroom as soon as I get to work/school etc...grocery stores you name it...I know how frustrating it can be it's awful!

I saw your post and wasn't going to reply at first. But then I see how rush_rulz mentioned how people don't reply.
Speaking for myself: I do reply many a time, even if there are no other replies and sometimes because there are no other responses. But there are so many issues that get discussed here and I spend so much time responding to some of these questions.... I try to make time to respond to the ones I am more familiar with because I enjoy giving advice that I am more comfortable with. Your question is so all-encompassing - where do I start - apart from writing some words of comfort?
I feel you've given a detailed description of everything, but I don't know of any "physical" cure that is easily describable as all-encompassing. Most people here tackle things, one problem at a time - it makes it easier to discuss -since there are so many ways of dealing with the individual issues you've described - many of the discussions on the board could be put as a response to your question. Sorry for venting.
Nevertheless, I can see the motivation of having your entire case history described. At that level it is very difficult for us to make an assessment because most of us aren't doctors and short of a physical exam even a doctor would be hard pressed looking at your overall description to come up with something you've missed.
There is one thing I would describe as all-encompassing though and on this point I somewhat agree with rush - I use visualisation techniques (which is slightly different from meditation, according to my current knowledge) all the time and they work for me all the time. As for describing them - I do so on my web page. It might be easy to search and find using my name. I've also posted in the past some techniques (if you are interested in them). The methodology behind them stems from a couple of my personal beliefs and a complex science which is hard to explain briefly and more so without diagrams and sketches, and sound effects.
Here is one such posted technique, which I've modified since the last time I posted this (I find the changes make this technique several times more effective):
Imagine a perfectly enclosed glass cylinder with glass threads (like the threads of a screw -change which way the threads are wound around the cylinder later on) and inside the glass cylinder you can have differently coloured and differently tasting juices (sweet, bitter, sour, salty, coffee.... tastes) that are sloshing around in the cylinder. The cylinder also has liquids sloshing around pouring downwards and upwards around the threads.
Now imagine this cylinder is at the left rear corner of your head and is a little under half the height of the back of your head. Now imagine the cylinder is spinning round. Try imagining it spinning clockwise and anticlockwise as well as the threads....(change the winding of the threads too) - see which combination makes you feel like the threads are scooping some brain material with it.
Also imagine that perpendicular to this cylinder at the midsection of the cylinder there is a line drawn about 2 cm away from the cylinder whipping around in a circle with the cylinder. It is about 2cm long. This line is about 2 mm thick and string is being spun from it. The string that is being spun (like homebased weavers pull cotton from a cotton ball to create threads for a homespun cloth) is being pulled from the top and bottom edges of the glass cylinder and the pulling is causing the line to spin like a spindle spins on a sewing machine.
The same imagery can be applied on the right hand side, however the line should be found 2cm from the top of the cylinder (instead of at the middle) and the thread should be pulled towards the middle of the cylinder (instead of to the bottom).
The modification I made was to add this: Imagine another mini glass cylinder about 3mm in diameter and 1cm in length. This cylinder is located at the vertical middle of the main cylinder (the glass cylinder you imagined in the preceding paragraphs) and is perpendicular to the main cylinder. It is about 5mm away from the main cylinder. This glass cylinder contains a differently coloured liquid from the main cylinder. At the outer end (the inner end being closest to the main cylinder) of the cylinder is attached a set of blades of a helicopter rotor which are black and spinning extremely fast. (So now the helicopter blades are spinning in a vertical plane with the mini-cylinder attached to it's center). The combination of the helicopter blades and mini-cylinder are spinning around the vertical axis of the main cylinder - both clockwise and counter clockwise and occasionally like those rotating fans which just keep going back and forth between two points (change the position of the two points once in a while).
Also Imagine this: a gnarled root of a very large tree (an upside down v-shape almost) - The fat end of the root is about 3mm in diameter and the root is narrowing towards the tip. This root is found on the top left hand edge of your head pointing straight backwards along the edge (ie the tip of the root is nearer to the back of the head, than the fatter part). It starts from about 4cm from the back of your head and ends at about 1 cm from the back of your head. Now imagine this root is actually a nerve located and shaped like the root. Each time the root is passed by, by the helicopter blades - it chops the root and cause the root to have splinters pointing outwards from the chopped halves of the root.
Well, I hope this technique helps you and possibly some of the others. There are more advanced changes I could make to this technique, but I'm done typing and figuring out descriptions for today.
Cheers, Raju.

Reason: some changes.
I have had IBS-D symptoms for over three years now. I say symptoms and not actually IBS because I’m still not convinced that there isn’t a better explanation for my problems that just hasn’t been found yet. I base this on the fact that I am waiting to see a specialist after having an ultrasound reveal that I have a fatty liver. But that’s another story…
You said you haven’t had luck with fibre. That’s too bad. I have taken one heaping teaspoon of Metamucil every morning for about six weeks now and it seems to have helped me reduce the diarrhea. I still get pain and urgency, but at least it’s some progress. Something else that I have tried that so far has worked is this – it may sound weird, but after my last bad attack, I decided to start treating it like a recovering alcoholic. I made a note of the day and time (Sunday February 13 at 3:30 PM). Since then, whenever I feel pains coming on, I think to myself, “12 days and 20 hours” and the pain seems to subside. The next time I have a bad attack I will have to reset my “counter”, but at least it gives me something to aim for rather than just concentrating on the attack itself. As 6th_sense has obviously discovered with his visualization techniques, the mind is a very powerful tool.
