Possible allergy to powder fiber.

I am so upset. I have had such bad intestinal problems and I started using powder fiber. It has really helped a lot. I however when have it my throat feels like there is something stuck in it for the rest of the day. I am thinking maybe it's making my throat swell up back there. How else can I get that kind of fiber? Do the fiber chews work as well as the powder. I use it to stop diarrhea. Eating food with lots of fiber does not seem to stop diarrhea like using the powder fiber does. What to do???

Re: Possible allergy to powder fiber.

Most powder fibers come in capsule form. Like psyllium that is in Metamucil and the fiber that is in Citrucel. Metamucil also come in wafers. Just make sure that you drink enough water with each dose because these fibers absorb alot of fluid.
If you don't intake enough fluid -- the fiber will constipate you or produce pellet type of stools.

Re: Possible allergy to powder fiber.

Kari,

When psyllium fiber products first came out there were some nasty incidents of choking, esp. at nursing homes.

If fiber powder is NOT dissolved in adequate water, and not followed by additional water, a mass can can lodge in the throat, swell up, and cause choking.

My son uses some Fiberchews that are like Necco Wafer Candies, w/only 2 grams of fiber per chew. They use a different fiber -- not psyllium -- and they may be one option for you to try.

Psyllium allergies also do exist ...

Best wishes.

Re: Possible allergy to powder fiber.

Yeah that's what it feels like it maybe getting stuck in my throat. I put it in a large glass of water and only use 1/4 of a teaspoon and then also drink a bunch of water after and still it feels weird in my throat. I'll have to get those capsule ones. Hopefully they work as well for me. So far I haven't had a problem with it making me constipated at all. I take medication that causes me to have diarrhea so this fiber really helps to slow things down. I used to take immodium almost every day which is not good I can build up a tolerance to that and it would stop working. This is more natural so I feel I could keep using it forever. So they come in capsules huh? Not tablets but capsules. I would think it capsule form it would work good too.

Re: Possible allergy to powder fiber.

My wife uses the capsule form of psyllium from the Vitamin Shoppe-- they are the largest I have found ---880 mg per cap.
She normally takes 3 in the am and 3 after supper.
