Can bread crusts or heavier bread make IBS worse? - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Message Board

Hi everyone,

I suffer from IBS but had been fine for about six months. However, over the last couple of weeks I have been bad again. Over this period I have started eating the crusts from my bread (previously I had cut them off). The wholemeal bread that I eat has also been made slightly heavier by the manufacturers (they have changed the recipe). The bread is nimble wholemeal (I live in the UK). It contains wholemeal flour, water, yeast, wheat protein, salt, vinegar, cut toasted wheat, cut malted wheat, Soya flour, vegetable fat, malt flour, sugar emulsifier e472 and flour treatment agent E300. No new ingredients have been added from the previous recipe but the weight of a slice of it has increased from 20g to 22g. Could either of these changes have made my IBS worse?

Possible, though I couldn't say for sure, however I did read somewhere online can't remember where now that wheat and also vinegar can cause IBS to act up and looking at the ingredients you have listed there is a fair bit of wheat in there, and also the vinegar, thats not saying it is causing your flare ups but just mentioning the info I have seen, it could be a possibility

Get tested for celiac disease. It is an intolerance to gluten, which is found in wheat. That would make sense if you have started eating more bread crusts.
