Foods and IBS

Hi all,

Just wondering if there are any foods I should cut out or include to make IBS easier to handle?

You might try limiting your dairy and greasy food intake. I'm lactose intolerant, so if I consume a lot of dairy products, or straight milk, I'll get a bad attack. Also, too much greasy foods will do me in as well.

Keep a food diary for about two weeks. List what you have at each meal and snack. And list how you feel a little while after. Eventualy you should see a pattern if food bothers you and you can eliminate the offending food group. Sometimes, if it's coffee that sends you cramping or running to the toilet, you find you may tolerate one cup but two will do you in. OR a litte dairy is fine, but you can't have a glass of milk with breakfast and pizza that night. It's a process of elimination and control. It can be fustrating, but once you find the right combo's, you tummy will thank you.

spicy foods do me in and barbque can cause a bad attack as well. I had honey barbque sauce with some chicken recently and within a couple of bites I was rushing to the bathroom and was in there several minutes because of it.

my lactose intolerance is weird, according to my dr. Orange color cheeses will affect me no matter how little I eat. However, I can eat white cheeses in moderation and have no symptoms.

You need to try and figure out what your triggers are. Mine is caffeine and whole grain products - whole wheat bread, etc.

Brown rice is good. Cooked oatmeal (the slow cooking kind). Eat salads and veggies after your meal and not before. Stay away from carbonated beverages, caffeine, alcohol.

There is a good book by Heather van Vorous (sp?) but I can't remember the name of it.
