| Re: Medical Accomodation = Employee Nightmare
I have been in your position and this is what helped me:
*Citracel powder (not the tablets) mixed with water twice daily, but at least 2 heaping tablespoonsful into 8 ounces of water per dose. It should have a strong orange flavor, if it doesn't put more in! I know this is a laxative, but do it anyway. Trust me. Fiber products are really bowel "normalizers" although they are marketed at laxatives. If you are too far in either direction (diarrhea or constipation) they help bring you back to the middle.
*Lactobacilli supplements. Lactobacilli are the good, healthy bacteria that we all need in our gut to help it function properly. Look for one that has several different strains of Lactobacilli in it. There is a product carried by Wal-Mart made by a company called Digestive Advantage IBS formula that is a good one. There are other good ones out there too, that is just the one I know off the top of my head.
* Activia yogurt by Dannon has probiotic healthy gut bacteria in it. Eat 1 serving of this twice daily. You can eat this anyway even if you are lactose intolerant as the probiotic bacteria in the yogurt help you digest the lactose (and with regular use can make a positive difference in your lactose intolerance!)
* Go back to eating 3 meals a day plus healthy snacks with plenty of fruits, veggies and whole grains. You are starving the healthy bacteria in your gut by not eating all day and they are dying off, thereby worsening your symptoms. You need food in your stomach for you to live, and you need it for the "good" bacteria to live!
* Consider applying for a medical leave under the FMLA law for a minimum of 2 weeks, a month would be better, and give all this a try during this time. It will take a few weeks for these changes to kick in, and your symptoms may bounce around some as you implement it all, but I strongly believe they will help you if given a chance.
*Once things are under better control, start trying to identify "triggers" for your symptoms. I found that Latte's were really bad for me, I guess the lactose and caffeine together were just too much for me to handle. Onion rings are another really bad no-no for me. Find out what is bad for you so you can avoid it.
I know how miserable you are right now! If these suggestions don't help you, go find a GI doctor who specializes in IBS. There is help out there for you, you just have to find the right help! Good luck and keep us posted!
