IBS/Blood in stool

Hello - I am new here so not so sure how this works but not sure where else to turn. 26 years old, dx with IBS about 2 years ago, although had symptoms much longer than that. I have many bothersom symptoms, including extreme bloating and alternating diarrhea and constipation. A couple times in the past few months I have had dark black, tarry stools. Also with loose stools I tend to have blood in the stools, but only with loose ones.

I do see a GI specialist and I have been treated twice for small intestine bacterial overgrowth, which seemed to relieve my symptoms for a small period of time but they kept coming back. After the blood started I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy, both of which were normal, although colonoscopy showed small internal hemorrhoid. Negative for both Celiac and H-pylori. Was on Zelnorm, which seemed to make my symptoms somewhat manageable but then it was taken off the market. Most recently have been taking Donnatal but experienced mild palpitations so d/c usage on own. I had the problem with the blood while on Zelnorm, so I don't think that my medication is the problem.

I guess I am wondering if the blood is from the hemorrhoid - how would I tell if it's from that or from something else. Also, what can I do to make it stop and to help relieve my IBS symptoms - since no more Zelnorm symptoms have been worse. I eat a fair amount of fiber (2 fiber one bars per day, 2 fruits and 2-3 veggies per day). The blood is scaring me a bit, and the symptoms make it difficult to function in everyday life.

Any help anyone can give would be great. Thanks!

Re: IBS/Blood in stool

I wouldn't worry to much if I were you. You are awfully young to be having these problems. You've been checked out by a doctor and had all the tests and its probably the IBS causing it. I never have blood in my bowel movements, but Ive been having constipation with my IBS and had a catscan and I had to drink that chalky stuff and after the catscan I had an explosive movement and I think I saw blood which concerned me. Im sure you are fine and try not to worry as that makes IBS worse. Stress causes flare-ups. Ive been under a lot of stress lately too. I hope you are better soon and try not to worry ok... bj

Re: IBS/Blood in stool

Crazy... I was logging in to ask the same thing. I would rather not go through all of the testing to see what this is all about. I have IBS and hope this is nothing to worry about. I have been overly stressed lately, so I will just take a chill pill, some Prilosec (my doctor had me taking that everyday, plus Levin at every meal... which helped until I got lazy and quit taking the meds... now I am back on them).
