Cold Sweats, Dizziness, Crazy Diarrhea, Cramps...

Periodically I have these "episodes" which I can feel coming on beforehand (very shortly beforehand). I get disoriented, cold, hot, sweatty, dizzy, my sight grows dim and then I get these terrible stomach cramps followed by waves of voilent diarrhea. This usually goes on for 2-3 hours and just leaves me absolutely drained. I have a sore stomach and rectal region for 2-3 days afterwards and just feel like I was rode hard and put away wet for the next 24 hrs or so.

This first happened in October of 2006. My wife rushed me to the ER, where they did EKG's, CT scans, bloodwork, rectal digital exams, etc and everything was fine. They concluded that I had a vasovegal syncope reflex which made my blood pressure drop to 50/30 which caused the passing out part. The Doctor says that the cramps can cause that to happen.

I am starting to wonder if this is all IBS - I have two sister in laws that have the EXACT thing and their doctors have told them that it is panic attacks. I does not seem to matter what I eat, I cannot connect a common food to the episodes. It has happened 4-5 times now since last October with no firm diagnosis.

Any like experiences or knowledge thereof?

Thanks.

Re: Cold Sweats, Dizziness, Crazy Diarrhea, Cramps...

IBS patients share many similar symptoms but it's really hard to know if you have it without ruling out all the other possibilities. Have you returned to a GI specialist since your trip to the ER? Have you had a colonoscopy or been given a diagnosis?

The symptoms you describe are rare for me. It has happened that at times I have had all that you mentioned, but my daily symptoms are not nearly as severe as what you are experiencing. In addition, IBS is not usually something that only happens every few months. Most people suffer with symptoms daily.

Have you ever been checked for migraines? Many of your symptoms are exactly what I used to get when I would get a migraine. Obviously, you have more than that, but it is something to look at.

Re: Cold Sweats, Dizziness, Crazy Diarrhea, Cramps...

Just an update - I had a colonoscopy and the other one where they go down your throat as well on two consecutive days in November of 2007. I have Barrett's esophagus and had three fairly large (benign) polyps which were removed. Since that time, I have cut my caffeine down and quit smoking completely. Changed my diet to mostly vegetables and fruits with limited amounts of meat. I am working on eliminating meat altogether. I am happy to say that I have had no further occurences of these "episodes".

The GI doctor says it was a "spastic colon" and that perhaps the polyps were causing it....

Dear No name at all, the symptoms you described are exactly what I have, and I know that I have IBS. All that happens when I have had dairy, (like icecream, or certain kinds of cheese) or when I have a food that I am allergic too. It is a violent reaction that occurs, hot or cold sweats and running to the bathroom pretty darn quick. It also sets off the panic and anxiety button. This is very common for IBS suffers. A change in diet changes all this quite well. I have been working on it little by little. I still suffer, but know how to remedy alot of it. Hang in there friend! Right there with ya!

Sounds like the symptoms I have from hypoglycemia. I can control it by avoiding sugar and balancing high carb meals with protein.

Re: Cold Sweats, Dizziness, Crazy Diarrhea, Cramps...

I have had IBS-D for many years. Last night I had my most recent episode just as the OP had. Chills at first, then cold sweats, then diarrhea. Probably about 30 minutes. I have never passed out but came close. I usually leave a puddle of sweat on the floor. I have had all the tests, it's IBS for sure. It only happens about once a year but that is enough! No caffeine, alcohol, red meat, oh..if it tastes good, don't eat it. That is hard to do. I had two hamburgers, one beer for dinner which I don't think caused it but these foods probably don't help it either. There must be a trigger. I do eat fruit and vegetables a lot and yogurt everyday. I think I still have to change my eating habits but not really sure in what way. I'm with you all on this one....but in light of more serious illnesses, this is not too bad. We have a lot to be thankful for.
