Actually, I am surprised that you went through so much pain when having this procedure done the first time. Perhaps request that your doctor make sure that you are completely sedated. My gastroenterologist only does them when the patient is completely sedated. He takes care of the procedures and then you end up waking up in the recovery room (they immediately brought me 7 up and crackers, since I hadn't eaten in 36 hours!!).
The only side effect that I had from the procedure, for some reason, was a bit of constipation and minor abdominal pain after eating. Within a few days, I was just fine.
Again, do talk to your doctor about sedation if you are frightened. It is completely worth it.
