Re: does IBS cause ribbon shaped stool

I also just started having this ribbon shapped stool as well. Is it something to be concerned about and what exactly about IBS causes it?

Re: does IBS cause ribbon shaped stool

Thanks bellyblues, I was diagnosed with Gastritis and Esophagitis this time last year, Dr put me on Nexium (I would rather suffer than have the side effects) with no results. I've been taking Metamucil daily for 22 years, this is when my constipation first started, but I've been pretty regular up till july of 05, then it started I became bloated. After numerous Dr. visits I was diagnosed with Prostate Infection "What Ever" ran a course of Leviquin? then things got worse, tested for STD's (Happily married couple "What Ever" again) negative, then Colonoscopy, EGD, Gallblader function test, Barrium enema CT scan, Gallblader Ultrasound, all negative. My symptoms are Abdominal pain, Extremly sore intestines, Bloating (at any time for any reason eating or not) cramps seem to subside after eating for a bit,Testical pain usually relief after BM, Ribbon & pencil shaped stool (not all the time) "No blood in stool in two years", sometimes fatigue and lower back pain, very rarly acid reflux (once in 3 months) and frequent urination. Did a colon cleanse a month ago felt great for a week then PAIN and BURNING again. Went to health food store they gave me Colostrum seem to help with burning and cramps, they also seem to think its IBS. Does anyone agree or have a different idea. (NO INSURANCE, and OUT of money!

Re: does IBS cause ribbon shaped stool

Hi Duck!
My first suggestion would be lay off the Metamucil. Like you, I took this for 10 years, on the advice of EVERY doctor I've gone to for my gut. Three years ago I landed in the ER with a colon impaction. The GI specialist (best in city) told me that fiber supplements like this, over long periods of time, can do more harm than good - especially psyllium husk fibers like the one mentioned. When you become constipated and continue to use a bulking fiber supplement, you are draining the colon of the necessary fluid it needs and bulking stool when you are already "plugged".

"Ribbons" are the result of the spasmodic motions of the IBS colon. Whereas a normal bowel will have one large contraction that propels the contents forward and out (hence, one normal BM), the IBS bowel has many spasms or contractions all throughout, ping-ponging stool back and forth and then "squeezing" it out. Thus, you will see some very, very strange shapes and textures in your toilet!

For me, fiber supplements are the kiss of death. I avoid them at all costs. I used to lean more towards D but as I age it appears I am destined for the fun times of C! The single most important thing I do daily is drink tons of water. I try to get at least 64 ounces a day. I include as much soluble and digestable fiber into my diet as I can with foods like winter squashes, sweet potatoes and yams, oats and oat brans, barley, etc. I avoid highly complex fibers like whole grain breads, pastas, brown rice (although I'll have that occasionally), kashi, etc. Of course, veggies present all kinds of problems as well and I never eat salad or raw veggie.

Colon cleanses that you buy from the health food stores are nothing more than herbal laxatives. I don't find them to be helpful and in fact, would even say they can do some harm to the delicate balance of bacteria in the colon. You might want to look into colon hydrotherapy - a much more "body friendly" and natural treatment. I loved it and never felt better then when I used this therapy.

If you recently went through a course of antibiotics you might be in need of some good bacteria replacement. You might want to consider a probiotic. Remember that these can cause some excess gas, bloating, and even (in my case) more C!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: does IBS cause ribbon shaped stool

Hey! Thanks a lot Bellyblues seems that you have done your homework on IBS and a couple of other illnesses also. I stopped the Metamucil cold turkey the day after I read your post, my stomach cramps seem to have all but gone away, Ive gotton C but not unbearable, so I took a small dose this morning, seems to have helped.(maybe ill cut it back to a couple times a week and see what happens) I read up on the Hydrotherapy I guess I need to see how expensive it is ? Money's tight wife and I are both nursing students right now. Also got a list of Soluble fiber foods, I have been eating most of them for the past year unknowingly. THANKS A LOT for the info, gotten more result from this than 5 different Doctor's and lots of $$$$$. Ill keep you posted and Thanks again.

Re: does IBS cause ribbon shaped stool

That's great!

If you are reaping some benefit from fiber supplements, I would recommend Benefiber over Metamucial as it (the former) qualifies as soluble fiber.

Good luck!
