Pain in lower right abdomen - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Message Board

Hi I wonder if any one can help me. I have now suffered with IBS for over 10 years in the large Colon and have managed well up until now. Last November I was admitted in to hospital with a suspected appendicitis, after further tests was told this was not the case, although I still had pain in the appendix/ileum/colon area.

After further tests, colonoscopy and CT Scan they can find no reason why the small intestine/Ileum should be painful, (even though an Xray showed an area in my small intestine which was not functioning properly) the specialist has now put everything down to IBS. Even though a blood test showed I had an infection in the bowel and I was put on a 16 day course of antibiotics.

Could this be IBS? I am at my wits end as I donâ€™t believe itâ€™s IBS as the pain is so different to what I am used to with IBS and is not behaving like IBS. The pain has certainly triggered of my IBS in the rest of the bowel and I think that's what is throwing the docs.

Anyone got any ideas?

could be a spasm.
i have had such awful pain that is diagnosed as intestinal spasm which can be caused by IBS. it's so bad where it hurts to move! breathing even is painful. mine only lasts for at most an hour and i was given an antispasmodic called Levsin. it's a little pill you put under your tongue to let it dissolve.

ask dr if this could be the case and if you could try the pill. it doesn't prevent it-nothing does, but you can have it on hand in case an episode comes up.

I would agree with it being a spasm if the pain came and went but it's constant (if it is a spasm then it's a very long one!). I found out the other day, that the infection I had in the intestine can mimic appendix or Crohn's that would explain why it took two months to diagnose and treat! I am wondering whether the internal wall of the ileum is damaged with the infection being there for so long!...Anyone heard of this and if so why was it not picked up on the CT scan?
