hypnotherapy for IBS - anyone completed it?

Hi there, I have had IBS symtoms for a couple of years, all started in one particular job, gradually got worse, i stopped eating because i couldnt eat anymore, and eventually i crashed at work and it all turned into full blown panic attack, so i took sometime off work (didnt like it anyway! ;]), went back a few times and eventually gave it up, all because of now having constant anxiety issues/stress/poorly tummy. it was like torture sitting in an office for hours feeling that bad! im sure putting a human being through that kinda pain over months/years would be against the geneva convention. it nearly 'broke' me, certainly made me depressed for a few weeks.
anyway, im all for a quick fix, without perscribed drugs, but i really need to get back to work! poor
and im sure mine isnt related to diet. i've had blood tests and scans, all negative, nout wrong with me scientifically kinda good news. but anyway... i had started hypnotherapy, and it helped alot, i actually had a couple of days where i didnt feel sick in the mornings last time!!!! but i cant afford to go , so i have stopped for awhile until i have go the money to start again.

so my question>
anyone else used it effectively for their particular IBS? cant find anything on the forums so far ?

i need to go to the dr's and get some anti-depressents to stop my nerves for a little while until i am stable in a new job and complete hypnotherapy. but i really hate those pills, they make me feel like a zombie
not a nice way to live either especially for a 'creative' person

Re: hypnotherapy for IBS - anyone completed it?

Hi,

Yes, I've had hynotherapy and yes, it worked for me. I posted the following on another IBS board.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had read about hypno therapy and went to see my doctor who said that if I wanted to, he could see no reason to give it a try but to make sure I went to someone who was on the central register of hypno therapists.

I went to see him and started a course of sessions. In these sessions I would learn to relax and to control my breathing, so if I got stressed I could do some deep breathing and the moment would pass. I had some tapes to practise to in my own time.

IBS makes you stressed and stress makes your IBS worse so it is a vicious cycle. I was also asked by other people if it was all in my head. I know it wasn’t! If it was, then I would have found a way to deal with it.

I had a weekly session for a couple of months and about half way through, I left the session and as I walked away I could feel all the emotional baggage of the past 7 years just fall away.

Whatever the hypno therapy did, it worked for me. It helped me control some of the stress.

If I was in a situation where I felt that I might have to leave and go to the toilet, I would try the deep breathing and it would help.

It restored my confidence and gradually things improved. I got a new job and started working in London. This involved a 40 minute train ride and to begin with I found it difficult getting through the whole journey without having to go to the toilet. The toilet trains are not very nice. If I have to go at the station toilet, then I just take my time and get the next train. I found that my breathing exercises work in these situations.

This was three years ago. I still don’t like going on courses for work but I make sure I get there in plenty of time to go to the toilet and to get a seat near the door and if I have to go out I do. Sometimes I have to leave early but lots of times I get through it.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Did your hypnotherapist give you relaxation cds? Mine recorded the treatment during the session so I could play it back at home and playing these a couple of times a week really helped.

I have only had the only odd attack lasting a day or two over the past three years. Am currently experiencing a two week attack but am hoping that it will not last much longer.
