Unhappy Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

Just FYI...diagnosed with IBS, PCOS and possibly endometriosis (haven't had a lap yet).

Just before a bowel movement, I start to feel very heavy in my lower abdomen/pelvic region. Then I have one and my whole lower abdomen burns and aches for a while after. It hurts all the way across my lower abdomen and also in my upper right quadrant (no gallbladder). Also, my groin aches, my upper legs feel weak, and I still feel heavy in my lower abdomen until things seem to calm down...usually after one or two hours. I dread bowel movements because they make me feel terrible.

I just seem to feel better when I have food in my system.

I can't seem to find anyone else who has pain after a bowel movement. Can anyone relate to this?

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I DO! It's not every time, but depending on the amount of gas and turbulence in my colon, sometimes moving "stuff" out creates even more room for gas pockets and spasm. I really think they need to add this symptom to the criteria for dx because it's pretty common. I guess that is what they mean by "incomplete evacuations". The only time I feel somewhat pain free is after a severe bout with natural (not laxative induced) D. I LOVE those days!

I do. I know I've read that a characteristic of IBS is relief after having a bowel, but usually for like 15 minutes after having a bowel, my stomach hurts.

I would check to see if you have an anal fissure. It caused me that pressure before the BM and then the pain in my groin/buttocks/thighs. It has been 5 months since I got mine and has trouble healing. I would go back to your GI and aske him/her to check for it.

Fissures are usually accompanied by excessive bleeding. I also have a fissure but no pain at all unless I've had a run with D for days on end. The kind of pain the OP was referring to sounds like abdominal pain, not rectal pain. That was my impression!

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

Yes, I have pain after a bowel movement, not in the rectum where a fissue
would be but overall in the intestinal area. Sometimes gas & spasms up under
my ribs and around the back, sometimes pain and spasms in left or right
lower quadrants. Actually feel better on days I don't make a bowel movement!! My thought is when the colon is packed there's no way for it
to go into spasm. I try to take my metamucil right after a BM to fill up the
space!! Sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't. Gastro told me colon is like
a hose, if it's not packed, there's room for the hose to kink (spasm) that's
why the metamucil 3 x a day and for the constipation or diarrhea which ever
the case. In my case, it's stress that makes my colon spasm, just like a
direct line from my brain to my colon!!

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I guess I'm a bit late replying...but I just wanted to say thank you for the responses.

To the pp regarding the fissure, it's definitely not in the anal area. All of my pain is in my lower abdomen, although I do feel kind of achy all over after a bowel movement as well (what on earth could cause such an odd symptom??)

I hate this pain so much!

It's good to talk to others who understand...

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I have this. I have BAD pain after a large BM, deal with constipation, so they are large. It will hit me all of a sudden and then the pain sets in an hour or so later. I had it today and in pain right now. What can be done to relieve it?????

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

Hi Suffering, I,v had this for many years. I got a colonoscopy-nothing wrong. The doc,s didnt say well lets looh into something else, so I thought I just had to live with it.Then I got lupus among other things that IBS just seems to go along with them.I told my lupus doc about it and he ssaid they can do something for that. So back to the doc,s I go,to make a long story short he found I had some kind of bacterial infection or dsomething to that nature.Sorry I forgot.Put me on two different meds for two weeks to clear it up.Then he gave me HYOMAX amuscle relaxent for cramping.Food can set it off so keep a diary, it could be greasy food, dairy products, ect.Even stress, my food problem was to much salad when I was tring to diet. But he said he would prabably only ge able to help me 50%, which turned out to be true. Buy anything was better than nothing. I was in so much pain I thought I was in labor. It sometimes took hours to be over and all I wanted to do it go to bed afterwards And my stomack still was very tender for hours afterwards also. The other thing he wanted me to take was ALIGN a over the counter med.So I would suggest is going to see a GI specialist. Hope this has helped .Take Care Home Sweet Home

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I also often have colon pain after bowel movements. I've noticed that the sooner the pain arrives after a BM, the longer it lasts. What has been helpful for me is metamucil taken daily with lots of water. I must drink at least 3 quarts of water every day. A good brisk walk also brings some relief.

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

OMG! I finally found some others that can relate to my problem!
I also have excrutiating pain after a bowel movement. It seems to come from just behind my belly button. It is tender there and it radiates out and I can feel it in my back directly across from the belly button. It lasts for hours afterward. I don't have constipation and I am eating healthily as I have been for years. I started getting this 20 yrs. ago and I have been in and out of doctors's offices being told, eat more fiber, its all in my head and that I have IBS which all have not helped! Some doctors have not even touched me! I have been tested for allergies, H. pyloria, barium test and nothing. I don't have diarrhea, constipation (a bit sometimes but if I do it is not always connected with the pain as the pain is intermittent-I had an easy BM today and it hurts like H.) No blood or mucus in the stools, stools are healthy. I don't have pain on days that I don't have a BM. So I feel like there is a possible link to the colon cramping, or being pinched and it is causing my nerves to react BIG TIME!!! I have fasted, done colon cleanses, detoxified my liver, I am currently doing green smoothies and I am the healthiest in a long time but still pain...even worse! I am now trying Rejuvalac-sprouted wheat water and also cultured cabbage juice in case I have a compromised intestine like PH imbalance, ulcers or even cancer and this is giving some relief but it has only been a week of the juice so I don't have enough to report. I do get gas and bloating in the morning and at night too. I wake up early with colic. I am flatulent at night and gas is trapped by morning. So evacuating could cause the gas to move and expand and press on nerves that go SPASTIC and the PAIN-unbearable! I curl up in a ball and can't do anything in the mornings. I have reaaranged my whole life to accommadate this problem. I work aft. or evening as mornings are unpredictable. My social life has declined as I just can't predict my spasms. Every second day I am in pain. I can be pain free after a BM too. So, everyone is there similar symptoms? Let's figure this out together, for our health sake and for our freedom.

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I am in a similiar situation and have had EVERY test in the book done by my GI doc. I have pain only AFTER a bowel movement and the pain is located just above my belly button. It feels like I have a pound of bricks on my stomach. It is immediatly after and lasts for HOURS. Nothing helps relieve the pain. I have tried several antispasmatics, muscle relaxers, etc.

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I have seen several people suggest a possible anal fissure. I suffered with that for 3 years before a surgeon finally diagnosed it. I had the surgery for it (very painful). Within a year of having that done the pain came back. The pain I experienced with it was a feeling of sitting on razor blades or voiding razor blades when ever I had a BM. It did get to the point where I couldn't sit, stand or lay with out it hurting. I still have the burning, razor feeling, but that is mostly during BM, the pain I experience now seem to be lower in the abdomen than the cramping I experience with the IBS, and a feeling of sitting on a balloon that is going to pop, and a feeling that the area most would identify as a tailbone area feels like it is having a spasm or is throbbing. I am a member of another board and it was suggested to me to ask my GP about something called a Levator ani Syndrome. Look that up and see if it sounds similar to the pain you have. I know when I hurt it hurts to walk, I usually walk with a limp in my left leg when this acts up and every thing I do seems to pull in that area, from trying to bend, sit, get up, walk, it all feels like it is pulling in the area of my tailbone. I know it is not just hemorrhoids.

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I have IBS and I have pain in the rectal area making me feel like I need to have a bowel movement even after I just had one. Your symptoms can be caused by the IBS as it might be your colon is in a spasm and the burning you feel maybe a acidic or gassy food you have eaten . You may need to stay way from those kinds of foods. It might be of a help to you if you keep a food diary for two weeks and write down when you seem to have more problems with the burning sensation and more problems with spasms, gas pains, severe abdominal cramps and bloating with certain kinds of foods. Sometimes I get gas pains so bad that I have to go into the bathroom and try to expel as much as the gas as I can . I put my hand on my lower abdomen and press on it to try to get rid of the gas and I move it from right to the center and then to the left. Sometimes I have a lot of excess gas right before I need to have a bowel movement. I am finding that drinking 64 oz. a day of water and 25 grams of fiber help a lot with the IBS symptoms because this adds bulk to your bowel movements and it makes them move faster down the colon and you tend to have regular bowel movements usually after a meal because eating makes the gstrocolic reflex(peristalsis) kick in. I make time everyday at the same time to sit on the toilet for 30 minutes to have bowel movement about 20 minutes after I eat my breakfast. This has helped me not to have constipation problems anymore which I have had all my life until about a month ago when I started doing this.

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I have this too !!!! I always read that ibs pain is relieved by bowel movement . Mine is the opposite , when it first started (2 months ago) it was after bowel movements ,I feel cramps in my lower abdominal area for half an hour or a bit more. sometimes I even feel week during bowel movements but never fainted. Till now I still have these cramps in the same area but they come randomly , and they are here on & off for more than 2 months now . this whole thing started 2 weeks after i got food poisoning or bacteria with severe diarrhea and cramps. and I was going hrough a lot of stress bec of some personal problems . And I woke up one day with all these symptoms . did ultrasound, stool tests, urine tests & all were normal. I went to 2 GI specialists said its Ibs & anxiety and that colonoscopy is not necessary since I dont have blood or mucus in stools. plz help !! any ideas what could this be ? I get worried sometimes that it might be colon cancer ;(

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I guess i have, too..Mine is like;

Just after i have my defecation, my upper-middle right side (exactly where the ascending colon lies down) begins to cramp so much..It feels, as if someone squeezing my colon ^^

It doesnt happen every day though, but its quite often.. After 15-20 minutes, it fades away slowly. All i can say is, there's a gas movement inside, i can hear & feel it, when it changes its position..

My question is btw, do any of you people have "morning gas" ?

Re: Am I the only one with pain AFTER a bowel movement?

I to have had this on / off for at least a year or so. Just kept putting it off as I do not want to know what else is wrong with me. After a BM it feels like you have to go again like you have no control. And the pain is unbearable, what I did find to help the pain is this new thing called the bed buddy u can find it most anywhere. Bed bath and beyond, Boscov's and online carries it. It is like a hot water bottle only better. Nuke it for 2 mins and lay in bed or sit and place it on the pain area. It seems to relax the spasam. I have a urinary dys so I do not need to know that I have another disfunction. Mind comes and goes no rhyme or reason when. But I 'am headed to the doctors to discuss.

Best of luck.
