Unhappy Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

I am a 34 year old male that has in the past 2 years have had unbearable gas. It seems I only get this late afternoon or night time before going to bed. I am a very healthy eater (chicken, yogurt, protein shakes, etc.) and work out 5 days a week. Its to the point now where I cannot even take my own smell. My stomach gets bloated and full of gas and when I let it go, it seems to smell just like methane gas. Its awful!! I have cut out the protein shakes, tried to not eat dairy products, but nothing seems to work. When I am with my new girlfriend I cannot let it go due to the nasty smell, but I get stomach cramps so bad that I cannot even have sex with her. Does anyone know of anything I can do?? Colon cleanser? Gas-X? If its a pill or supplement that I can take everyday or even just take it when I see my girlfriend to stop this???? PLEASE HELP!!!

Get your gallbladder checked out. If the bile is not helping digestion then the bacteria in the intestines is doing the job instead. Bacteria working on food definitely causes stinky gas.

[QUOTE Removed]

Hi there,
I have in the past year or so developed this problem as well. I was in college when it started happening. (Massage/personal training school to boot, so I was always really close to people ) It was horrable and mortifying. I didnt know what was up. I started doing cleanses often to pin point what it was. I had given up dairy products 6 months before it started happening so I knew it wasnt that. I already didnt eat red meats of any kind (only turkey chicken and fish) the only thing I changed when I went to school was that I worked at a healthy food wrap place and tortillas have significantly less flour in them then bread does.. so when I quit to work at a gym as reception while still in school, and I started bringing SANDWICHES for lunch!! This is when it all started!! I went to see the dietitian at work and she looked at me and I told her my symptoms and she said then and there that it was the bread, wheat flour- high in gluten.

This was it. So simple! Flour turns into a sticky glue like substance in your instestines. I am gluten intolerant! I can eat it, but I along with everyone around me will pay for it later!

It has been a huge struggle to give it up. Everything has flour in it. Now I know I can't have it, I want it more. My favorite cereals, whole wheat toast, pasta.. it's so hard to eat out at all now.. I usually stick to salads and stir fries!

Even now, months later.. I still struggle with saying no. When I do give in and have it, it's worse then ever and is SO apparent that that is what the problem is.. smells like rotting eggs and sulfur.. I get so embarassed if it happens in public I am so scared to get called out on it! I have gotten "gas stop" pills that I take with meals I plan to have that contain wheat. I can't tell yet if they work.

My advice to you right now is, cut out all wheat. If you have a product where you live called "wild rose herbal detox 12 day program" GET IT! If you can't get it then buy it online!! I highly reccomend it.. and follow the guide ( it is strict clean eating which by the sounds of it you eat very clean to begin with) It is only tough for people who eat horrable. I do it every 6 months and dont feel any different then normal because my diet is very similar to the detox's meal plan.

Since finding out, I pretty much just eat a lot more sushi ( because rice- thankfully- is completly gluten free. I still can eat ancient grains such as spent and kamut, (kamut is far better tasting then wheat anyways! and is only about $1-2 extra per loaf from a local bakery then regular mass produced bread anyways) My organic store has kamut hamburger buns and hotdog buns too, and also ancient grain wraps ( but look out for ones that still include wheat)
I started having skim milk and yogurt again, now that I know it wasnt dairy causing my embarrassing moments. I still hate cheese and ice cream makes me sick.

Also, any carbonated drinks- especally artifically sweetened ones make me bloated and gassy too.

Well I really hope this helps you. 1 out of 5 people have some sort of gluten intolerance even if they have no symtoms. Here are some quick facts I found.

"Gluten is a highly complex protein that occurs in four main grains: Wheat, rye, barley and oats.

Gluten is present in all types of Wheat grain like whole grain wheat, wheat bran, spelt, triticale and others.

This means Gluten is also present in all baked foods that are made from these grains: bread, pies, cake, breakfast cereals, porridge, cookies, pizza and pasta. There are thousands of processed foods which contain Gluten. "

However, if you get organic oatmeal that is processed in a plant that makes sure no wheat touches the oats you are fine. It will say right on the bag/box 'gluten free' .

You will want to test and try different grains for yourself and see which one you like best and doesn't mess up your system. Rice flour is an excellent sub for things, they make Rice pasta which is awesome.

I have gone on forever and I am sure there is lots more I have to say... but if I can help someone then it is worth all the writing!!

Ps. please updates!

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Wow........thank you very very much for this "theboysroom" I appreciate the response so much. There is alot of useful information in there. It makes sense! Just to let you know what I have recently did, considering I didnt get any replies from this post, is that I went to my doctor and he perscribed to me two types of antibiotics, Apo-metronidazole and Novamoxin Amoxicillin. I take this for a week (into my 2nd day) along with 2 Activa yogurts a day for 2 weeks. My doctor said these antibiotics kill the bad bacteria in my intestines and the yogurt will replace this bad bacteria with good bacteria. He said this will work. Im very sceptical about this, cause Im sure he gets paid as per presribed medicines. I have tried Beano, gas X and any other type of anti-gas you can think of but they didnt work either.
Im going to do more research based on your information you gave me and I will let you know what I come up with. How long after you stopped eating gluten did you notice a difference? Have you tried the antibiotics? I could ask you a million questions and go on how brutally painful it is, but this for now is perfect!
Thanks so much again for taking time to give me the information like that and I will keep you posted with what I come up with.

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Scottguy,

I also have a gas problem, predominantly in the afternoons and evenings like yours! "theboysroom"'s post was very helpful! i am going to try and not eat wheat gluten for a couple of days and see how my gas ends up. However i have one question for "theboysroom"

Do oats by themselves actually have gluten in them? or is it just that the oats are processed in a way that involves wheat, so that gluten-intolerant people cannot eat them without consequences?

I wonder this because i have recently started increasing my soluble fiber and oatmeal is a very good source of it. I am not sure whether i can still consume it while on my gluten-free diet.

Thanks in Advance!

Hey Helen45477...thanks for the quote. Yeah theboysroom really knew what she was talking about.
Just to update you from the antibiotics I took with the activia yogurt, it has worked well for me thus far. Its been a week after being on the antibiotics and it seems I have less gas and the smell isnt near as bad. I still do have the odd bad one. Im assuming it will just all come back again soon. I am seriously thinking about going Gluten free but its life altering and sooooo expensive. A loaf of Gluten free bread is $5.99 for 10 slices.....wow!! So Helen45477 let me know if you go in the Gluten free diet and let me know if it works. Thanks alot for your quotes!!!!!

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Scot,
Gluten intolerance is called Celiac Disease. And, Gluten is contained in wheat. barley. rye and to a leeser extent oats and their by-products that are many. If you think you are Gluten intolerant -- you should go to your Doctor and be tested for it.

I think your problems is caused by several things-- Digestion of the foods you are eating and the friendly intestinal bacteria that aids digestion is out of balance.

I think you should take a digestive enzyme supplement like Omega Zyme or Essential Enzymes by Source Natural with every meal as well as snacks. Of course there are others but these are very good.

You also need to make your intestinal friendly bacteria more balanced-- by eating a good brand of yogurt, kefir and take some probiotic supplements.
I don't know what yogurt and kefir brands are available in Canada but go to a health food store and find out the yogurt that has alot of added cultured strains. All kefir is loaded with friendly bacteria,

The probiotics that I like and use-- are Pearls, PB-8, Culturelle, Primal Defense, Reuteri and Bifidus. Some help with digesting and pass through & some re-colonize your intestines with the friendly type you need.

I also think you should eat more green veggies that contain Phytonutrients. I eat a green toss salad at lunch daily. I like and use Green Phyters -- a supplment that I buy from the Vitamin Shoppe. It contain chlorophyll and green juice concentrates.
Green veggies will help you deoderize your digestive tract.

Limit your sugar intake because unfriendly strains of intestinal bacteria thrive on sugar. Your intestines have over 400 different bacteria strains present that are in constant warfear. You need to give the good ones a better chance to bring them back to a Normal Balance.

Rice is the only starch that does not produce any Gas during digestion.

BTW -- I have had the Gas problem that you are experiencing.
The suggestion I have written about--- work.

Harry

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Harry, thank you so much for the response to this. The crazy thing is that I have tried everything and have now come down to this. I bought a super enzyme that I am taking with every meal and snack, a probiotic with all good bacteria once a day 2 hours after I eat and then I am taking a Green Berry supplement where it falls into the green phyters as you mentioned once a day. I am starting all of this as Im typing now. I will let you know how it goes in the next couple of weeks. I had a Gluten test today and will wait for the results. My bloating pain has been so bad that I was even contemplating emergency the other night, but it has subsided a bit. I am now scheduled to see my doctor again to get me into see a specialist.........yes, its getting that bad. BUt Im hoping the information and supplements to try will help in the mean time. How long did it take until you noticed a difference? Just curious to know cause I dont want to keep taking these products if they are useless to me. Thanks again Harry, I hope i hear back from you soon!

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Scott,
I posted my last message to you more than 3 weeks ago -- I thought you were not interested or had solved your problems.

I am not familar with any of the things you are taking because they are Canadian products but if they work as they are suppose to -- the bloating will go down alot is just several days because you are dealing with the incoming food and not the entire intestial tract that is about 9 meters (30feet) long.

But, the odor takes several weeks to several months because your digestive tract has to be re-colonized with the right type probiotic supplements and deodorize with green veggies.

Are you eating any YOGURT and drinking KEFIR daily. Both are FOODS. The yogurt you can eatten several teaspoons every 2 hours or so and the Kefir once daily.

I don't think you are taking anything that you don't need to solve your problems -- I am just not familiar with them.

Harry

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Hey Harry!!! Thanks again for everything. Yeah it took me a while to get back to you because I was trying another thing with the antibiotics but that didnt work so I finally am trying your plan.

The products you told me I kept in mind they were american and went to the nutrition store and got all comparable products. The names you gave me were the names of the brands of the supplement you were getting, well thats what they told me anyway. So im sure hoping they are comparable! The super enzyme is just an enzyme that helps digest carbs, proteins and meats. The greens supplement has no clorophyll in it which concerns me. It is a full blown 10 servings of fruits and 10 servings of vegtables in one serving. And the 3rd thing im taking is a probiotic which has 50 billion cultures per capsule which i am supposed to take once a day. I also eat Activia yogurt which is high in good bacteria. I have never heard of the Kefir until you told me about it. Im doing some research to see where I can get it in Canada.

After taking everything after my 2nd day I do feel better and not getting bad cramps from the gas, but I definitly still get gas and it stinks! So several days with the bloating? I cant wait until that goes, thats the worst ever. So just a question for you, if i keep holding my gas in without releasing the nasty smell I will get bloated right???? Cause i have a new gf and im scared to let it go hence giving me nasty bloating. Well I will sure look forward the day where Im not bloated anymore!!

Did you get a celiac test? Did you see a specialist? I sure does sound that you have had the exact same thing as me. Are you back to 100% now??? How long has it been since you started all of this???

Again Harry, thank you soooo much for this. I have had some really bad days in the last few feeling I may have stomach cancer, but of course thats me thinking the worst!!! After the only 2nd day Im feeling really optimistic because of you and the plan!! I really appreciate it! Thanks!

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Hey Harry, just wanted to let you know I also bought some liquid chlorophyll. I drink it every morning and it is supposed to deoderize my colon just like you said in your original e-mail. I have been taking all of these supplements for a week now and I am starting to feel better. I had a bad set back lastnight cause I had bad gas and it stunk bad. So Im hoping that was the end of that. I went to see my doc yesterday again and I demanded to see a specialist just to make sure there is nothing really wrong. I will keep you posted on that. Hope to hear back from you! Thanks Harry!

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Hi scottguy,
I'm hoping you can help me out. I am currently undergoing the exact same problems you were having. Extreme amounts of gas (passing gas over 60 times in an hour) with incredibly terrible smell. It is so much worse in evenings, and can last hours, and my stomach gets very bloated (I look as if I am 4 to 5 months pregnant with the bloating). I am a vegetarian, eat very healthy, no trans fats, very little saturated fat, try to cook at home and exercise. I have been trying to keep a food journal and track what is causing it. I have tried going off lactose, to no avail. Now I seem to notice that it seems to occur with bagels/bread. Is this what you found in the end. My doctor pretty much just laughed and said I was eating too much fiber. She told me to do a colon cleanse and take probiotics (didn't help). Please reply. I would really like to know if you found any solutions to this problem. Thanks

Re: Unbelievabley Stinky Gas and lots of it!!!! - Please help!! - Thank you for help!

Scottguy, I am eagerly following this thread. I have the same symptoms as you and I am interested in how the supplements help you. I am currently just eating rice, peas, chicken broth and chicken and have been for a few days now. I still have stinky gas at night times, but the amount as been reduced a lot since I switched to my new boring diet, but I can't eat like this forever.
I've been to the doctor, and they ruled out Celiac Disease and I'm scheduled for a Colonoscopy but not till June. Weither I eat Gluten or not I get gas, so i'm sure it's not that (BTW Celiac Disease and Gluten allergy aren't the same thing as someone mention above).

I'm really looking forward to your results because I would like to ease the gas till June when I can get definite answer as to what my issues are.
I have other symptoms as well, but I have had bad/stinky gas as far back as I can remember. I'm hoping it's unrelated from my other issues.
