Re: Can you get IBS at any age?
Hi Oleander - I'm sorry if you are suffering from IBS symptoms. IBS is frustrating, painful, and worrisome if you don't know what you are dealing with. I do believe IBS symptoms can flare at any age. I am 50 and have had my symptoms flare up notcabely over the past 10 years or so. I think stress and hormones and diet are my triggers. I do believe that I suffered from it even as a child however. I am sure that some of the foods I didn't like as a child were due to the fact that they didn't make me feel good. There are plenty of resources on the web but I will have to get back to you on that.
IBS is diagnosed through elimination - that is - you get diagnosed when they have ruled out all other causes of your symptoms. I don't know what symptoms you are having but this will ususally involve some or all of the following: colonoscopy, endoscopy, upper GI, Lower GI and/or ultrasound. I had an upper GI, abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds, and a colonoscopy for severe, migrating abdominal and pelvic pain and alternating constipation and diareahh (sp?). All came back normal, thus IBS. I can control it fairly well through diet and exercise although sometimes it just wants to strike regardless of what I do. Good Luck and I will get back to you with more info.....jrose
