IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

Hey everyone! First off I guess I wanted to introduce myself... I am a 21 year old college student with a boatload of problems... ADD (im on adderall 20mg XR twice a day) ...anxiety (xanax .5mg when needed), but worse of all IBS (currently on miralax everyday and nexium 40mg). I was searching google for how to help growling stomachs and found a really great thread on here (which I read all 25 pages of!) but realized when I joined that the thread was closed......

Anyway I am very happy I found this site and that there seems to be way more people than I thought that suffered with the same probems as me.

My main concern is my growling stomach ESPCIALLY when im in class ... it really consumes most of my mind during class because Im always thinking about it and hoping it doesnt happen and no one hears. I read a lot of different options on the past blog that was closed on what I could try taking (which I will definetely experiment with!) But my issue is that when it comes to easily digestable foods, which I would assume doesnt make the stomach make all those noises.... they are all basically empty calories.

I am a complete heatlh nut, and I dont eat ANY white bread, white rice, stuff like that. In fact, I try to completely avoid any simple carbs. I know that protein especially from the whey protein shakes I consume several times a week, are REALLY hard to digest and I notice a lot of stomach noises from that... .but I really dont want to change my diet in a negative way. Does anyone know of any foods that are easier to digest AND healthy??? My usual diet consists of healthy fats, lots of protein, and complex carbs

Thanks for any advice

Wink Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

I have the same problem. People will sometimes look at me and say "are you alright?" Sounds like a cat fight in my stomach! My cure, I bring a oat and nut snack bar with me. The oats and nuts in the snack bar are full of fiber so I dont really wory about a flare up from it. It quiets my stomach for those quiete times in public.
Hope this helps..

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

Just a thought here....but have you tried taking some digestive enzymes with your meals to help aid in the digestion of some of those "harder to digest" carbs? Couldn't hurt to give it a try to see if it helps with the gurgling. For what it's worth, I have extreme stomach gurgling too...but my stomach also "churns" a lot and I have a host of other annoying symptoms to boot. I just got tested for Celiac's disease, and will get my results in the coming week.

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

Let me guess, your Celiacs test came back Negitive. Been there, done that! Dr. just perscribed me Lexipro saying IBS is caused by anxiety. I do not feel any anxiety but most of my severe flare ups occur in the morning while getting ready to go to work.
Anybody in the same boat?

Yes, my test for Celiac's did come back negative...which really didn't surprise me, as I honestly don't think a gluten-intolerance is my problem. I do, however, think a Candida overgrowth is not out of the question. I started taking a high-potency probiotic, along with my digestive enzymes at every meal and I am feeling a slight improvement in my symptoms. The stomach churning/gurgling have lessened dramatically, to the point where it no longer keeps me awake at night...so that's a good thing. I still have trouble with the bloating & gas, but the diarrhea is gone for now and I've been having somewhat normal and regular bowel movements. So, I think the probiotics are working, but slowly and it will take more time before I notice a huge improvement. I'm also thinking about taking some grapefruit seed extract, as I've read that it knocks down Candida fairly well.

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

xtrainergirl,
I too get those embarrassing rumblings going on in my intestines too. I finally found out what was causing mine. Mine happened when I'd have milk products.

I can't drink milk anymore so I drink vanilla soy to put in my coffee and ceral, plus the other product I use is Lactaid milk. I'm learning to stay away from one of my favorite desserts, which is "icecream".
I'd be standing in line out in public and all of a sudden you can hear my intestines, more towards the side of my back instead of the front of my stomach, and I didnt' want people thinking I was being rude by passing gas. because it wasn't gas coming out, it just was inside.

I haven't had the problem since I found out my culprit.

I just went to a gastro yesterday for a problem that's getting worst, where I have this right sided pain that comes and goes where my appendix sits.

My family dr. examined me and said I need to go to my gastro and have him ck it out and possibly do surgery to see if it's scar tissue from former surgeries. but the gastro dr. said by doing another surgery will only make MORE adhesions and instead chose to do my coming up colonoscopy sooner than July.
he didn't even do any blood work on me which I thought he would've to see if my appendix was inflammed. I have rebound tendernous and feels like my intestines have been punched by a 300lb man. It's so tender inside.
On my past two CT scans I had ordered by my family dr. the radiologist said the right lobe of my liver is extended to the ileac crest? but the dr. palpated the area and said he doesn't feel anything. which he didn't peform any liver function test either. I was so surprised to see that he's really not concerned about the sporadic attacks I get plus the tenderness by the appendix.

My chronic constipation has started again. I used to have it the other way around years ago, and my old gastro dr told me he thinks I have IBS.
but now this new problem has risen which I get these horrible, rip out your hair type of sharp pain all through my abdomen at times. I've had 3 so far all within two years. I had to go to the ER because I could not suffer the pain anymore. It exhausted me to have to bear it. I sent my husband to the store one night to get me an over hte counter product to relieve gas. it didn't work right away so I went to the ER. and an hour later when I was sitting in the ER to be seen, which was a long time becuase they were very busy and short on staff, all of a sudden my pain just stopped. so I got dressed and left without telling anyone I was going.
I called them when I got home and told them. they never got to run a battery of tests which now I'm regretting I left.
so I still dont' know what the cause of this horrible right sided pain was.

the first time I had it, the CT scan showed I was filled up to my chest with stool. My dr. said that the intestines can go into spasm which can cause such sever pain. But I never went for a follow up.

so I started taking supplements from a well know microbiolgist and doctor who makes products. I take a powder that consists of multiple greens and fruits in it, plus I take a form of powdered clay to help assist absorb toxins in the intestines and expel them, plus it helps with my constipation. I also take a substance called phflush, which is all natural that helps me when I'm blocked for a few days. you drink one glass of this stuff and it cleans you out like when you're doing your prep for a colonoscopy. Plus it's all safe.

I've had multiple colonscopies because of my dad dying of colon cancer and my two sisters dx'd with breast cancer. the rate goes up for colon cancer if one has had breast cancer or a family history of it.

one dr. kept me awake during the procedure which was bearable, but another dr. put me asleep with the following one 3 yrs later which I liked better.

they don't use the fleet phospho soda anymore I found out yesterday. I was shocked to hear they pulled it off the shelves because people weren't drinking the recommended amount of water to drink when you take the product which wound up causing renal failure in many many people. The high sodium content was responsible for that.
so now they have mirlax to take and these laxative pills that the dr. gives along with the instructions.
I find the worst part of having a colonscopy is the not being able to eat part.
it's not the same having liquids compared to eating solid food. it's not as filling.
Please keep up updated if you can. I really wish the best for you and hope all goes well for you.

sincerely,
Linda

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

linda, i might be in the same similar situation as you, i am not, sure. for the past two weeks i have had the abdomen pains, sometimes i feel like they start at the top of my stomach and move its way down. went to the ER several days ago and the Gastro Specialist said i was fine. parents think its stress, but ive relaxed the past few days. and I am not really sure where to go from here. I am on adderall, i take either 15 or 30 mg of adderall in the morning (depending on my day). I also drink milk and have yougert on a daily basis. I have been drinking milk for a long time though/ Could my body really change that fast.

Another one of my theories is that i recently started working out and taking muscle milk after my workout. after consulting with several gym buddies, i now realized i should be taking the muscle milk 2-3 times a day, (before workout, after workout and several hours before bed) which i have not been doing consistently, my theory is that my stomach could be reacting to not having the right nutrients in my body. i also have not been eating much, eggs and a bagel in the mornning, maybe a midday snack and a light dinner. not sure what to do from here.....i am in so much pain though

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

The muscle milk could be causing it! Whey protein (which is what I believe it has) is really really hard to digest! Plus Muscle Milk in my opinion is one of the lower quality proteins...people buy it because of the name but in reality its one of the higher fat protein mixes...which pretty much lowers efficiency in protein absorption because fat will slow down absorption of protein.... also unless your really trying to put on tons of muscle or weight in general I wouldnt drink 3 protein drinks a day....its going to add a lot of calories to your day (but I dont really know your situation, maybe you are trying to gain weight). Personally I sometimes will have a protein shake after my workouts ...but rarely anymore because ive noticed the differences in my stomach gurgling after stopping protein shakes. If anything, Ill only ever have them after a night workout because i know ill be going home and wont be embarassed by the noises :-p

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

Hey Linda! Wow thanks for sharing your issues, seems like you are in a way worse boat than I am in . . . Ive also had a colonoscopy and nothing was found other than internal and external hemmoroids (from the constipation I assume). The gastro told me we would run other tests but I just havent made the appointment to go back because Im so loaded with schoolwork right now. Ialso try to travel alot during my breaks so I dont have time to see a Dr every week, ya know? I have cut out dairy products which seems to have helped... by the way have u tried Almond milk? So much tastier than soy I think
Im on so many medications though (adderall, xanax, and a mild sleeping pill) that I dont want to have to rely on one more .... usually if I'm really constipated I'll just try to eat lots of fiborous veggies.... in a way I like that it forces me to eat healthy lol! Canned organic low sodium 14 vegetable soups are my best friend

Anyway best of luck withyour issues as well...keep us updated!!!

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

FIRST,
Stay out of Starbucks!! Go to wallyworld or your favorite health food store (where you will pay too much) and get supplements! Start with one l-lysene on an empty stomach. I take mine when I wake. Drink some spring water. Try to avoid tap water. Eat as many fresh things as you can and try to get Organic. Stop brushing your teeth with sodium lauryl sulfate. It is in a lot of products to increase shelf life, but like MSG it causes cancer. Get on at least one daily vitamin. Go on the Candida diet for at least 2 weeks. Add back foods slowly. Eliminate Dairy,CAFFEINE,Sugar,Flour,MSG,ARTIFICAL SWEETENERS. You may eat brown rice. Do eat Ginger,Asparagus, fresh bell peppers,Broccoli and a lot of onions and garlic.AND AVOCADO IS OK. SOMETIMES I EAT AN AVOCADO FOR BREAKFAST.
ONLY NUTS ARE FRESH SHELLED PECANS,ALMONDS,WALNUTS,BRAZIL NUTS. ALL OTHERS PROMOTE FUNGUS.

NO FRUIT EXCEPT LEMONS FOR COOKING.
...may eat blueberries, rapsberries, strawberries AND green apples only after 3 weeks.
NO POTATOES. may eat red new potatoes after 3 weeks.
No breaded or fried meats.
No oils other than Olive and Coconut. Learn to cook with these.
NO CHEESE!! ESPECIALLY PARMESAN!!
Do not eat anything that is a fungus. NO MUSHROOMS!!
MELONS PROMOTE FUNGUS..AVOID THEM!
DO NOT EAT ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS EXCEPT XYLITOL.
DO NOT EAT CORN AND CORN PRODUCTS...THAT'S RIGHT NO CORNBREAD.
NO VINEGAR!!
ONLY USE SEA SALT!!
NO CEREAL !!
DO NOT EAT FROZEN DINNERS...THEY ARE LOADED WITH PRESERVATIVES AND FATTY ACID.
***DO NOT USE MOUTHWASH OR THROAT SPRAY..JUST GARGLE WITH WARM SEA SALT WATER,AS MANY TIMES A DAY AS YOU FEEL YOU NEED**
note..you may rinse your mouth with apple juice or apple cider vinegar,bu do not swallow it. Some people say the apple juice relieves burning mouth and/or tongue syndrome.
THE GOOD NEWS REAL BUTTER IS OK. AND AFTER 3 WEEKS, A LITTLE SOUR CREAM.
YOU WILL LOOSE WEIGHT!! usually just 10 lbs the first few months.
IF YOU BECOME CONSTIPATED...TAKE FLAXSEED ( I TAKE FLAXSEED OIL I GOT AT WALLYWORLD EVERY DAY WITH A HOST OF OTHER VITAMINS)

THIS DIET IS HARD ON YOUR LIVER..IF YOUR POO BECOMES WHITISH IN COLOR..TAKE SAM-E..MINE ALREADY WAS, SO GOT WORSE ON DIET..OK WITH SAM-E.
I will never eat pizza again, and maybe not Mexican or Italian ever again.
Restaurants pour Salt and Sugar all over your food. Do not drink Alcohol.
Remove any chicken that is not Pilgrims Pride from your diet.
Do not eat Oats,or other grains for 2 weeks. I suspect you all have Candida Albicans. Our diet and use of Antibiotics causes this to occur.
IS YOUR TONGUE WHITISH OR GREENISH OR BROWNISH ANYTHING BUT A PRETTY PINK??
Try this...First thing in the morning spit into a clear glass of water. If any thing hangs around on top, or if strings come down after 20 minutes ( sooner if you have this bad)...You have Candida!! You can confirm it with a lab blood or saliva test done in a reputable Lab.
DO NOT EAT MERCURY CONTAINING FISH.
ALSO, ASK YOUR DENTIST HOW THEY PROTECT YOU FROM MERCURY!! A LOT OF US HAVE MERCURY POISONING. YOU CAN DO A HEAVY METAL DETOX YOU GET AT THE HEALTH FOOD STORE,BUT DO NOT DO ANY OTHER DETOX AT THE SAME TIME. WAIT AT LEAST ONE MONTH BETWEEN CLEANSES,TO PROTECT YOUR LIVER.
***DO NOT LET YOUR DR OR DDS TELL YOU THIS IS NORMAL!!!**YES,EVERYONE HAS YEAST CULTURE IN OUR SYSTEMS,BUT A LOT OF US HAVE ASSISTED IT TO GROW OUT OF CONTROL WITH OUR DIET AND ANTIBIOTICS...IT CAN KILL YOU,BY FINGERING OUT INTO YOUR BLOOD,BRAIN AND ORGANS...THE MAYO CLINIC IS STUDING THIS,IT MAY BE THE ROOT CAUSE OF CANCER!!
STUDY HOW TO REMOVE FATTY ACIDS FROM THE DIET. THE YEAST LOVES IT!!
ASK YOURSELF...DO I DRINK BEER AND EAT PIZZA? IS MY DIET MOSTLY BREAD AND SUGAR AND POTATOES?
GOOD LUCK...DO GO TO THE INTERNET AND STUDY...WATCH OUT FOR HOAX CURES. I FEEL VIBRANT,NOW AND SLEEP WELL AND AWAKE REFRESHED. LEARN ABOUT PH BALANCE AND GET FATTY ACID OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM...STUDY WHAT FOODS CALM YOUR STOMACH.
COLLEGE STUDENTS,QUIT LIVING ON EASY TO UNWRAP PROTEIN BARS AND DIET SODA!! GO TO YOUR LOCAL HEALTH FOOD STORE AND ASK FOR ALTERNATIVES...READ LABELS!!

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

Hey yes I also have candida and am using supplements from Nature's Sunshine as I find them to be the best quality.

I use the probiotic bifidophilus and the digestive enzyme proactazyme.

you can buy them at:

www.naturessunshine.eu/uk/wellbeingandbeyond

I think the high protein diet is good but maybe not the shakes, they can contain a lot of sugar and chemicals.

good luck!

H.

Re: IBS troubles and "gurgling" stomach

i have the same stomach issues. i've been sick for 2-2 1/2yrs now, i pretty much lived at the dr office. had stomach ulcers, pancreatitis. now they can't find anything wrong & i'm still having the stomach gurgling & it feels like gas trapped in my stomach - it HURTS! i eliminated dairy from my diet & that has helped... when i had regular milk w/my cereal one day it made me sick all day! so i'm definitely lactose-intolerant now which sucks cuz i've LOVED milk my whole life =) whenever i eat or even drink just water i'm still having the stomach gurgling & bad gas. i work in a quiet office so its very embarassing. i started taking adderal again to try to keep me from eating after breakfast, then i'll have supper when i get home from work. even if i don't eat at work i still get the stomach issues just not usually as bad.
