i have a question has anyone experience this - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Message Board

I was told I have IBS 4 years ago, I was able to live with that. But now here is the question? I have SEVERE constipation, I am lucky if I have a bowel movement every 10 days, I talk to my Family doc on this he told me to take more fiber, so I did that I still can't go to the bathroom. I have the urge to go, then after trying to go to the bathroom for over 4 hours I still have nothing coming out, even though I feel the Urge to go. I have a back injury and I need to have surgery on, but I have now lost some rectal tone, and I did report this to an ER doc. Who do I report this too, when I feel like I'm getting the brush off for it. I read the article, posted by harry. I am now getting severe upper quadrant pain on the right,getting muscle spasms thru out the abdomen especially after I eat. I no longer have a gallbladder, and I am very active dispite not being able to go to the bathroom. If anyone has any suggestions on what I should do, I would be appreciative. This question is embarrasing. Sorry for the long post too.

Keep going with the Metamucil twice daily and ensure that you drink plenty of water. Also, keep an eye on your diet and ensure that you eat plenty of fruit and veg and it may be helpful to drink prune juice too.

You could also try taking some Calcium supplements that will help you have a bowel movement naturally. If you really cannot go, then try some glycerine suppositories to help. Using these are better than taking laxatives, as they stimulate the bowel directly encouraging it to empty.

Hi,I have the same exact problem as you do. I take Citricil daily 2Tablespoons Morning, doesn't cause Tummy cramps. And my Gastro Doctor has me on Ex-lax Stimulant free Milk of Mag.1 Tablespoon In the morning. It's the liquid, In a blue bottle. I take the Chocolate cream. It's made me have a big Bowel movement everyday. I don't take It at night , because for some reason, it makes me not sleepy. For some reason Fiber made me more Constipated

My doctor approved using small amount of water in the lower part. This allows small stools to separate and makes for easier passing. Metamucil and others just made matters worse. No matter how much water I drank still had the problem.
