Question Librax

Hi all!!
I went to my doc last week armed with all this infoon IBS.....and told her I want to be put on one of the meds mentioned on the board. She wouldnt prescribe Librax as she said it has valium in it...is this true?I think she may have got it mixed up with another. And anyway at this point Id rather have some quality of life than nothing! She did prescribe Zelnorm, but it would cost near $140.00 and the pharmacist said id have tot ake it at least a month to see if it worked. I cant afford something that will take a month to work when we arent even sure at this point if its IBS or not.I thought Zelnorm helped more with constipation?
She did refer me to have a colonscopy.
She also had the nerve to question my pain tolerance.....like to see her live with this pain!!!
I had a cystoscopy/urethral dialation/biopsy/numbing of bladder wall all done at once while i was AWAKE...a few of those procedures should be performed when patient is put under.

What meds seem to be most helpful for the paina nd pressure???
Anyone else feel the need to push?
And is swelling normal-i look like im pregnant?!!!

Thanks again everyone!
Tracy

Tracy,
Librax is in the family of drugs called Benzodiazepines --- it is like Librium, Valium, Tranxene, Xanax, Ativan, Serax, Centrax and several more. They are used to treat anxiety.

I don't know very much about the pressure and pain you mentioned. But, I do know about anti anxiety drugs.

God Bless---Harry

Talking

Yes, you are right about Zelnorm. It is a drug that has been prescribed for women with constipation type IBS symptoms. It has not been fully tested on men, so that is why it is prescribed for women.

Thumbs up

Hi!

I've been taking the generic brand of Librax for just over a month now and am just starting to see a difference. I suffer from IBS/D (for about 10 years now and it was getting progressively worse).

As I understand it, Librax contains a sedative (libruim) and an antispasmodic. I had started having mini panic attacks when I had to leave the house recently and thought that the sedative part would help with the pounding heart, sweating, and running back to the bathroom. It hasn't.. I honestly do not feel any effect of a sedative while taking this med. It doesn't make me sleepy or dopey or unsteady ... or relaxed.

However, it has made my stools more solid. So much so that I had what I called a victory yesterday. Was out shopping and felt that urge. Instead of having to quickly find some dirty icky bathroom, I was able to get in my car and drive 20 minutes home, and walk calmly into my house....without an accident! Believe me, I did a happy dance!

The only annoying side effect of this drug is extreme dry mouth. I wake up with a wicked sore throat most mornings (which goes away after I drink something) and stinky breath.

I'll keep you posted on whether I keep improving. My fingers and toes are crossed!

Hope771,

Zelnorm is for IBS with constipation. If you have IBS with diarrea the package insert says that you should not take it. It would make things worse for someone with diarea since Zelnorm stimulates a bowel movement. I just took it for a little more than a month. It has advantages (induces regular bowel movements), but didn't work for me (increased gas).
