Post Weak sphincter??

The good news is that With changes in diet and medication, my diarrhea seems to be getting less frequent ....

the bad news is that whenever I feel the urge to 'go', I have to go RIGHT THEN AND THERE! No matter how hard I try to hold it in (and I'm only talking holding it til I get to a bathroom, sometimes only feet away) I can't. This is with solid BMs....not just the loose stuff.

Is there something (I've tried doing those kegler<sp> exercises but it doesn't help) I can do... surgery maybe... to tighten up my sphincter?

Does anyone else have this problem?

Thx,
SB

Hi there seabell. Sorry for your troubles. It's very possible you have weak anal sphincter muscles; I think you can be evaluated for this by a good GI doc, but I don't remember what the test is called. I'm not sure by your post if you are male or female, but if you are female, have you ever given birth? Was the baby overly large? Did you tear the perineum area? I only ask this because I couldn't hold back my diarrhea all the time (but I now have solid stools because of Colestid), and during my first delivery, I had an episiotomy and still tore into the rectum. I think my sphincter's been weak ever since.

But depending on what your problem is exactly, I have heard that surgery can sometimes "tighten" up the muscles in the rectum/anus.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Katie G

The test for testing the stenght of your sphincter muscle is called manometry. I would go to a good university (not profit driven) hospital to get this test (or any other test).
