Hi, I was dignosed with ibs over a year ago, i have ibs d and c alternately and as yet I havent figured out my triggers, food wise. I was told my history of anxiety and depression was the cause the ibs, but that if I stuck to a healthy diet my digestive system would sort itself out in the end. The problem I have is that the healthier I eat ie fruit veg and salad, the worse my ibs seems to be, although even if I eat nothing at all I still get it! The symptom I find the worst to cope with is the excessive amount of gas I have which is worse with ibs c. I take acidophilus caps, calcium supp, multivitamin, evening primrose and kelp supp but not much change in symptoms. My question is, if I had to cut out fruit veg n salad to make the gas less of a problem what could I take for fibre that also didnt cause gas? Im in the uk and the medication that has been talked about on here doesnt seem to be available in the uk including the fibre supplements. Any suggestions?
Also I just recently gave up smoking and that has made my ibs ten times worse for some reason.
Any insight and advice welcome.
Sometimes fruit and veg can exacerbate symptoms and yes, you probably do need to cut down.
Fybogel is the English equivalent of Metamucil and you could try this to increase your fiber. You need to drink enough water with this so that you do not get bloating and gas. The Acidophilis should help with this too.
Also, I cannot quite understand your doctor telling you that your IBS was caused by anxiety and depression. If this is the case, then you need to treat the cause, which is your anxiety and depression to be able to help your stomach. It is no good eating a good healthy diet and doing everything that you are doing without tackling the causative issue, namely the anxiety and depression.
Think about this and see what you can do. The mind and the body are linked and what affects one will ultimately affect the other, no doubt about it.
Thanks for your reply.
Ive already tried the fybogel, didnt realise that was the english equivalent to metamucil. I didnt get on with the fybogel very well...lots of gas and bloating, but i didnt drink a lot of water with it and only tried it once so I might try again and perservere this time.
Yes I agree I should be tackling the anxiety but its knowing where to start as I feel that the ibs is the main cause of my anxiety so if i get that under control maybe I wont be so anxious and break the cycle. I did go to a cognitive therapist who suggested it was the other way around, if I tackle the anxiety Id have the ibs under control...but Im not sure i agree being as Ive always been an anxious person but Ive not always had Ibs, and when I was first diagnosed with Ibs I wasnt particulally stressed/anxious in fact I just got over a rough period and things were calming down then I get this!
Still, I'll keep trying to figre it out...thanks again.
Unfortunately, once you relax from stress, this is the one time when things can strike and if you were an anxious person in the first place, then it was probably only a matter of time before it started to affect your stomach. My feeling is that probably your Psychologist was right.
I really think that you should explore alternative medicine treatment. Alternative medicine treats you as a whole person rather than just your symptoms and could be very helpful for you.
