Question IBS & thyroid problems

Has anyone ever heard of having both IBS and thyroid problems?
I have been sick from June 2002 with:

I am gaining weight inappropriately
I also have Weight loss
I'm unable to lose weight with diet/exercise
I am constipated, sometimes severely
I feel cold when others feel hot, I need extra sweaters, etc
I feel fatigued, exhausted
Feeling run down, sluggish, lethargic
My hair is coarse and dry, breaking, brittle, falling out
My skin is coarse, dry, scaly, and thick
I have puffiness and swelling around the eyes and face
I have pains, aches in joints, hands and feet
I feel depressed
I feel restless
My moods change easily
I have feelings of worthlessness
I have difficulty concentrating
I have more feelings of sadness
I seem to be losing interest in normal daily activities
I'm more forgetful lately
My hair is falling out
I can't seem to remember things
I have no sex drive
I feel the need to yawn to get oxygen
My eyes feel gritty and dry
My eyes feel sensitive to light
My eyes get tics in eyes, which makes me dizzy and have headaches
I have ringing in ears
I feel some lightheadedness
Increased bowel movements
my feet get warm& moist
I have muscle weakness
sometime I have a fast heart rate
I sometimes get trembling hands
I have a family history of thyroid disease

After going to many specialist and many test I was told I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Then I had a thorat ultra sound where they found a bunch of masses on my thyroid and in my soft tissue
I am still waiting to be put on thyroid meds and was told if they do not help then they will remove my thyroid

Has anyone else gone through this??

You need to get on to the thyroid meds as quickly as possible, as it sounds as if your stomach problems are a direct result of its underfunction. Underfunction of the thyroid and especially if you have a family history of this, can cause sluggishness, lethargy, weight gain, depression and constipation among other problems, so yes, you may have IBS, but this is probably as a direct result of your underfunctioning thyroid and once you start on Thyroxine, you should find that your problems resolve, unless severe.

Treat the cause rather than the symptoms and you will probably find the solution.

Good luck.

That is really good that you managed to get an apponitment, although it is still a hell of a long time to wait when you are feeling sick!!

Some of these docs are awful and it seems to take them forever to work out what might be wrong. Sometimes it makes me wonder whether they ever did go through med school at all.

Anyway, good luck and I really hope you get a result.

RebeccaP,
I know exactly how you are feeling. I have Hashimotos and have been experiencing IBS like problems. I stopped drinking coffee as I thought that was the problem. It also happened after drinking Chamomile tea! Today at work got so bad I had to go home sick. I have severe cramping, bloating, and gas. I really am tired of feeling this way and will try anything to get rid of it. I am starting Citracel tommorrow.
By the way, I have been on thyroid meds for over 5 years and still have symptoms!

If you have cramping and bloating, then as well as the fiber therapy, you need to start taking Acidophilus caps/probitocs too. This helps recolonise the good gut bacteria and should reduce gas and bloating within a few days of taking it. Keep it in the fridge and take it on an empty stomach.

Rather than Chamomile tea, try Peppermint tea. It sometimes works better and is an antispasmodic too.

Also, try calcium supplements to help stop your diarrhea. You could be low on this if you have diarrhea and it allows your bowel to absorb back water naturally, thus making your stools firmer.

Suggest you try these in addition to the fiber therapy. It could really help.

Regarding thyroid problems, and it sounds as if you have them, probably the best forum on the internet is Mary Shomon's. Just do a Google search for Mary Shomon forums and it will come up. There are many there who post regularly and know more about thyroid disease than many doctors do, due to personal experience and trial and error. They even have a list of Top Docs in all areas. I have received much help there. Good luck!

Bellajoon and others:

I have had IBS all my life (since teens) - last summer I was prescribed Asacol and it has been a lifesaver....also I was recently diagnosed with thyroid nodule and put on synthroid - 9-5-03....seems to be a relationship between these - at least for us!

Feel Better!
