Angry Help!

Hi!

I'm new to this board. I'm 27 and have been living with IBS for about as long as I can remember. I have mostly constipation symptoms, but some diarrhea. For the past week or so, I had been having to go to the bathroom a lot, but only passing watery, mucus, and not much else. I went to the dr. yesterday and she told me to take magnesium citrate because I had a lot of impacted bowel material. I took the magnesium yesterday at 6pm and went to the bathroom repeatedly until 6 this morning. I got some rest and then went 3 more times this afternoon. It's been several hours now since I've gone, but I'm wondering if this will ever stop!! I'm now mostly having a lot of gas and still just a little cramping and grumbling sounds. Has anyone else gone through this? I've missed two days of work because of this and am afraid it will never end. The dr. also prescribed Zelnorm which I'll start as soon as this ends. I know it can cause diarrhea, so I have to wait until I know this has passed. I feel like I'll never get over this. I also have GERD and esophogeal ulcers and that has been worse lately, as well. Can anyone relate?

Thanks,
jannabear

janna,

Yes, Citrate of Magnesia is a VERY effective laxative. You should be safe to wander away from the porcelain throne after about 24 hours from the dose.

Have you ever had a colonoscopy or a lower GI series of barium x-rays? You really should get to the bottom of the cause. Irritable bowel is diagnosed by default by excluding the more serious conditions first.

While at the doctor's have him throw in a blood test for antibodies to H. Pylori if you haven;t had one during the esophagus workup. Your doctor shouldn't be prescribing Zelnorm til he's sure what you have.
