IBS and acid reflux/heartburn

hello!

My doctor says I have IBS symptoms but I get heartburn more often-pretty much every night, to varying severity.

Is there any link between IBS and acid reflux/heartburn? Does one cause the other?

Re: IBS and acid reflux/heartburn

I have both but they were diagnosed separately. When my IBS is playing up it doesn't effect my reflux or vica versa. That's been my experience anyway.

Re: IBS and acid reflux/heartburn

There is a definate link between heartburn and IBS, if your bowel isn't working corectly and food is either staying in the bowel for too long or going through the bowel too quickly then this can cause increase in acid in the stomach and cause heartburn.

Re: IBS and acid reflux/heartburn

I have both and don't get symptoms together, but I know there must be a link. I had surgery last fall for the severe reflux. (It was badly affecting by breathing.) I was supposed to be able to go off of all reflux meds after the surgery. Because of my IBS, my Gastro won't let me go off of the reflux meds. He said it would make my IBS worse. That the high amount of acid in my system would affect the rest of my digestive system. I'm still taking the PPI's twice a day even though I can no longer physically reflux the acid or food. I'm also still following both an anti-reflux and anti-IBS diet. Still have IBS problems though.
