Does nicotine cause IBS?

Does nicotine cause IBS? If not, does it make IBS worse?

My husband was, about the time he started smoking. He trying to quit now, with hopes that his IBS will subside.

Yes, it is, because smoking stimulates saliva secretion. In turn, smoke-laced saliva gets swallowed, and stimulates the secretion of gastric juices, the gastrocolic reflex, and peristaltic mass movement — the precursors to abdominal cramps and/or diarrhea. That's, incidentally, why people are told not to smoke on an empty stomach.

Re: Does nicotine cause IBS?

Let me clearify. Does it cause IBS, no. If you were dianosed with IBS will it add to your discomfort, yes. Nicotine and caffeine are both stimulants your bowels are very sensitive to.

Re: Does nicotine cause IBS?

Thanks for the input everyone. My husband started taking Chantix and has been nicotine free for a full week (he dipped). Since he quit dipping his daily IBS and heartburn have been gone!
