Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

So I am in the process of trying to figure out if I have IBS or a female issues like endometriosis. the cramps I have sometimes are DEAD on for period cramps but I have then not anywhere close to time for my period.

Do any females find that that is what their cramps feel like? It doesnt make sense to me because of the location.. your color is on over to the sides kinda and.. well I dunno

What do IBS cramps feel like?

Re: Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

Lkk,

I am so glad you asked! I have severe enodmetriosis, and before getting that proper diagnosis, I went through the entire gastric system ailments, including IBS, diverticulosis, pancreatitus, and a good two years of suffering. I was basically diagnosed as a result of ruling everything else out, and it was unbearable.

My endometriosis pain did not always correspond to my cycle. The pain is the same every time, and in the exact same place. It does feel like period pain. It had nothing to do with what I ate, and I had no digestion or gas or food related problems. It would hurt for a short time, or days on end. At this point, I have the pain weeks out of every month, and is totally disabling. Even after all the female scans, ultrasounds, xrays, MRIs, nothing showed up.

I am not trying to scare you, rather help you avoid the possibility of mis diagnosis. Endometriosis is horrible, but if you have it, lets get on with treatment, rather than go though what I had to, (and many other women as well). Keep in touch, I am interested in your story. janet

Re: Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

Hey Writeleft. Im glad to hear your comments. Its making me think. I appreciate your intereting in my story

You might be interested to hear the whole deal. Its such a long story but I will sumerize. For almost 2 years now (starting in 08) I have had this right lower abdominal "sensation" or twinge. I also had problems with these cramps coming and going throughout the month that feel like period cramps but those seem to ONLY happen when I am on birth control. When I was off the BC for almost all of 09 I never really had the P cramps deal but still had my right side sensation. The sensation was pretty subtle until I got off my birth control in January of 09. This sensation REALLY kicks in and even becomes just a bit of more like a pain around ovulation time. That is really when it kicked off. That 1st ovulation I had when stopping my BCPs that January. SO all of 09 the persistant coming and going period cramps were gone but I was left with this sensation.

Let me describe this sensation. It is really not a pain. its like a stitch.. sometimes I THINK I am feeling poop move past that area. for the longest time we were trying to figure out if I have an ovarian cyst because the sensation is right there or something right by my hip bone. sometimes it shoots sensations up my back right side.

As far as my bowels during this time. I was pretty regular BUT within the past 2.5 years I have had 3 of these Diarea attacks where I almost pass out (never go out though). The 1st time I had this I thought it was the Chinese I ate that night and I THINK it may have been! the pass out attack only happened the 1st trip to the Bathroom and the rest of the night was probably 5-6 more trip to get the rest out and it was no big. I was fine. The other 2 episodes Ive had of this (that was a year or more after this 1st one) they werent as bad. They were only 1 trip to the bathroom (with the almost pass out deal though) and then Im fine after!. Little shaky but thats it. I have heard of people having this. With each of these I seemed to have ate spicy food either that night or the day before.

Besides these attacks I mean, Ive had a few "digestion things" that are minor but new to me. Things like subtle nausea a couple times (not often or regular just a couple times where it happened throughout a week). OR I would have this thing where I feel just a littlle bleh after a normal BM. (again just a handful of times. my bowels during this whole deal were pretty good otherwise. I do occasionally struggle with constipation (but i have always had hard stool) and actually NOW and the past 2 months I have really been struggling with it. Nothing crazy.. just maybe going 2 days or so without going OR its just really hard and difficult to get out.

I did pretty well with 09 when I was off the BC except those 2 D attacks (that was no biggie besides the foreign almost pass out thing) I had my right side sensation but i almost got used to it. ovulation was a bit painful for me but, I could handle it. I just pushed it aside as I had a business to run. I had also had so many ultrasounds and one CT scan at that end of 08 I thought, I guess all is ok. Well Fall of 09 runs around and I had a few irregular period episodes and I thought, I better get to the bottom of this right side sensation and ovulation pain. I thought if I do have Endo I better stay on top of it. So I go back to the gyno
Well what does she want to do? Put me back on BCPs again! I swear I feel like BCPs is what got me into this. When this all started I was on Yaz (and had been on it for 1.5 years). So she puts me on Loestrin 24fe and I very hesitantly started it in March. Guess what comes back almost 2 weeks into it? Those stupid period like cramps! THey had been gone for months and they were my original complaint that started this deal. she said give it 3 months because it takes a bit right. The only thing it has done is take away the ovulation pain though I DO still feel like soemthing is going on down there during that time. I did have one month (2nd or 3rd month) Where the cramps and sensation stayed away for 3 weeks so thought, ok maybe this is working!
it didnt last...
THe next month (may I think) my stomach did start acting up! No attacks of D like those 3 episodes but just, gassyness, a little nausea, a couple runny episodes that seem unusual for me, AND the kicker, upper stomach pain that keeps coming and going! The upper stomach pain is what is bothering the most right now. I am not sure if it is from the stress of trying to figure all this out or something else. Its amost like I have this on and off indigestion problem. its just a knawing. I can have it for a day or part of a day and it will go away for a week.. then come back.

SO NOW I am seing a GI doc. He has me on these meds (Librax, which is actually a lower dose anti depressant that helps calm the gut etc). ITs not doing anything for my right side sensation or cramps but Ive only been on it a week or so.. I dont think that thing are ONLY bowel related. I am not sure I have IBS or not. He is doing this to see if it will reveal that I do have IBS by working. He may end up doing a scope.

Anyway I am at a place right now where i think that right side sensation is maybe a spot that has endo maybe? maybe its an adhesion from a cyst I may have gotten. I dunno, all I know is yes its there on and off almost every day but it REALLY reacts to ovulation time.
I wonder if I do indeed have Endo and it just messes with my stomach and bowels sometimes. The thing that throws my GYNO off is I DONT HAVE TYPICAL ENDO symtoms. I dont have bad period pain, I dont have heavy bleeding. I dont have pain with sex. Ive always had VERY easy going periods all my life.

BLEH sorry this was all over the place and I dont even feel I have explained it well but.. there it is! sorry probably a terror to read.
One thing can be said.. I am totally obsessing and stressing about this so I KNOW I am not making things better and Im prob making it harder to diagnose.

What a mess! I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have just gotten out of the emergency room again, was up all night last night with the endo pain. I want to read your post again in the morning, as I am all jacked up on dilaudid, and cant think straight.

I did see some things in your post that rang a few bells, so I hope you can be patient until I wake up with clear thoughts and can respond to you.

Janet

Re: Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

LKK,

Thanks for writing back, that is very cool!

Yes, There were many things you wrote that struck me, and I read the whole thing over just now. Have you followed up with the gyno? Are you still having the sensation?

My life proceeds, as well as the endometrisosis. I have found a pain specialist to treat the pain. Endometriosis causes a lot of nerve pain, so it is also treated for that. That medication is not an easy one to take, and I have just taken a huge jump in dosage, so my words are scrambled, please understand.

Over the last months, my pain seems associated with my bladder. When it is full, like at nighttime it hurts so badly. When I try to stand straight up, my body feels pain, and I need help by my family to get up, and have begun to use a walker to walk. Meanwhile, my foot wakes me up early thing morning with gout! The gout comes from all the medication.

Another day and life is STILL beautiful!

Re: Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

Hey LKK,

As a person with IBS, although im not a Dr., what you describe does not really sound much like what I go through.
With IBS you generally have some serious cramps associated with what you eat, though it does tend to be more sensitive when you have your period.

What I was wondering if while doing ultrasounds they looked at your gall bladder for stones?

Hope all is well!

To me they feel the same, and when I have my period my IBS is worse. I thought for a long time that I had Endo, but the only thing my GYNO did was give me the pill which I wasn't going to take. My GP recently diagnosed me with IBS though he didn't do any diagnostic tests. With my luck I probably have both. I've read that people with IBS can have Endo and vice versa.

It confuses me, I'm not sure if I have Endo or IBS or both. I have read that they kind of go together and it is very common for women to have Endo and IBS....lucky us

Re: Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

Okay I am posting this because I think it's important people that have my issue know how I solved the problem. I am a 35 yr old female and for the last 4 to 6 months I was experiencing a mild pain in my lower right abdomen that would come and go. I thought maybe it was IBS or something with my ovaries. Went to gyno who found nothing. Went to Dr who gave me a drug to take whenever I felt this pain. One of my co-workers started doing the South Beach Diet a couple of weeks ago and I had done it 5 years ago and lost 11 lbs in 2 weeks and thought, what the heck, I'll try it again. I've been doing the SBD diet since 9/17/10 and it is now 9/22/10 and I have not had this pinching pain in my lower ab since I started the SBD diet! I am SERIOUS! Since I cut out bread, cereal, pasta and fruit, the PAIN IS GONE! No, I don't work for South Beach Diet or anything, but I cannot believe that from just a few days of being on this diet, this mild, come-and-go, pinching, sharp pain I would get in my lower right abdomen is COMPLETELY GONE! I would highly suggest people to invest $8 in buying a copy of the SBD diet and starting it and seeing how you feel. As I said, I went to my gyno and then my doctor without help. But by simply changing how I eat this PAIN HAS COMPLETELY GONE AWAY!!!

I seriously hope this post helps some people. And if you can and are willing to give up bread, cereal, pasta and fruit for awhile (probably not forever) - see how you feel and if your pains/aches subside at all!! Good luck!!!

-From a happy, pain free person!

LKK,

Are you still here? Since your post popped back to life, I wondered how you are doing now? Did you ever resolve your abdominal pain?

Just wondering how you are,
Janet

Virginia, are you still doing South Beach and feeling better? I felt better when I ate low carb as well however I found it hard to do in the long term. I missed fruits and felt I needed fiber from cereal. Now I'm not sure if I should go back or what.

Re: Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

Hey! sorry it took me so long to post. I lost track of this post but just ran across it again.

Well alot has happened since I started this thread. I had a colonoscopy that came back negative (though he thought he saw some irritation which freaked me out but all biopsies etc came back negative) SO I THEN finally had a laporoscopy and sure enough I have endometriosis. He lasered it all off. there was some on both ovaries and splatters of it in most common areas. He said it was pretty superficial and he was VERY confident he got it all!!

It has been a bit over 2 weeks and I had my 1st period last week and for some reason some bad symptoms that are just like before surgery but worse are already back! He said give it 4-6 weeks. other sites say give it 10-12 weeks. I dont know what to think. Im having cramps and my same right side crap, back pain... Maybe Im just not healed yet!?? I hope that is the case. I think Im being impatient I am SOOOO stressed and anxious I know that is not helping either.

Writeleft did you have lap surgery and did they laser or remove your endo?

Re: Females: Do IBS cramps feel like period cramps sometimes?

Wow, You have been through a lot since we last chatted! I don't blame you for feeling very anxious about having the procedure done for the endo, just to have the pain back just like before. Oh, I can sympathize with you! I'm so sorry.

It turned out I am not a candidate for any surgery, including a laproscopy because of my illnesses. Instead I have been seeing a pain specialist to manage the pain. In the mean time, I have been bleeding like mad for about 2 weeks now, so I am getting sent for a endometrial ablation. The bleeding has sent me into horrible anemia, leaving me so weak I can't even get out of bed.

Endometriosis sucks! It is nice to know I am not alone though, and thanks for popping back in!
