About 2-3 years ago, I was diagnosed with IBS. I was always a very thin person and could eat whatever I wanted without putting on weight. My first signs of IBS was weight gain. I started taking the contraceptive pill at this time also and wondered if this was the cause.
As time went on, I started to experience constipation and diarrhea. I didn't think much of it until stomach pain came with it. I tried on numerous occasions to explain this to doctors, but I don't really think they quite understood what it was like. In the area under my breasts and above my belly button is where I was experiencing all my discomfort. It was almost like the feeling you get before your stomach 'growls' when hungry, but it was like the pressure of that feeling building up and building up, until the feeling would just sit there. The pain would have me doubled over most of the time. Another way I had described it was a balloon being blown up and wouldn't pop. It felt like a deep pain, not stabbing or achy, but mostly just a discomfort pain. Very hard to explain.
Later, I found that I was beginning to bloat and this has been the worst problem throughout. Severe bloating to the point that I was being asked if I was pregnant. I could feel the pressure right around my stomach and above the pubic area. Also discomfort in the lower back and my sides. My doctors were asking what foods I was eating. I have always been quite a healthy eater, but would snack often. I tried to explain, that no matter what I ate or sometimes drank, no matter what quantity - I would INSTANTLY bloat. No exaggeration. My doctor would give me a blank face...the only time I wouldn't bloat is if I ate nothing.
My mother suffered from crohn's disease, so my specialist sent me for a colonoscopy and gastostropy. Results were fine and I was told I had IBS. Now, what would help with my sever symptoms? Nothing. I was prescribed medication after medication and nothing worked. I was told to drink plenty of water and try to find foods which cause a flare-up. Increase my fiber intake...I actually have found that most dairy products milk and yoghurt make bloating worse, as well as Coke and other fizzy drinks. Sometimes alcohol. But as I said in the beginning, it doesn't seem to matter what I eat. Fact is - I eat...I bloat. Simple.
This drives me mad to the point where sometimes I will go without eating because I don't want the discomfort, nor the embarrassment of what eating does to my stomach.
Today I have found that exercise helps with the bloating to some extent although I still suffer with it as much as I did previously. I have no more pain like I did, but will get slight pains here and there which will go. Other symptoms I have are nausea, gas (quite severe) and fatigue. Sometimes hot flushes and like a 'shaky' feeling throughout my body which makes me feel sick. I am tired of explaining symptoms to doctors and not being able to find anything that relives my symptoms.
I start to panic sometimes when I read up and find that my symptoms are also similar to other severe and dangerous problems like cancer...I don't know what to do
