IBS & raw rectum

This is embarrassing to talk about and I don't know where else to turn. I am 35 and have been suffering from diarreah IBS for years. I have to go to the bathroom numerous times a day and all the wiping is making my rectum raw and bloody. I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem and what they did about it. Thanks.

Oh dear, I do feel sorry for you. As a nurse I can suggest that maybe you put a little baby cleansing solution (some thing like Johnson & Johnsons soapless baby clean) when you wipe. I know it ssounds like a bit of a hassle to do this, but the excoriations you are getting wont be so agitated. I do hope this helps you out.

Re: IBS & raw rectum

You could try using a special preporation from the chemists, E.G Anusol, or even a mild hemmeroid cream would do.
also try using moist toilet tissue, un perfumed if you can find it.
I really hope you feel better soon1
Good luck

Hi GM,
Believe me---WE have been there but welcome to the board anyway.
One of the better soothing ointments I have used is Lanacane --you can find it at most drug stores even Wal Mart.
To slow down the diarrhea I suggest you use a water soluble fiber like Metamucil. It is a bulk stool forming agent and is safe to take daily. Just drink 8 --glasses of water a day.It will produce gas when you first start but it will go away. Just stick with it!!!
God Bless---Harry

Hi...
Poor you,
We all understand as we have been there too, you can sometimes get a suppostry for the bleeding, or even a little bit of vaseline just to coat the anus....The acid from the diarreah also hurts as it burns...It may be a good idea to get the md to check just to make sure you havent got an anal fissure..This is just a crack or tear and because of all the diarreah it can take a while to heal.. Also as Harry says the soluble fibre is brilliant and will make the diarreah more managable...
Good Luck ,
Janie B

Re: IBS & raw rectum

Thanks for the replies. I have been taking metamucil for about 3 years now but it seems like things are getting worse. Although now it seems like my problems may not actually be IBS but may be due to an auto-immune disease.

IBS type problems do seem to run in my family (half of us are taling metamucil or citrucel), so it could also be IBS that is being agrravated by the auto-immune disease.

I hope it's not a fissure. It will take forever to heal due to the steroids and chemotherapy drugs I'm on to fight the disease.

Re: IBS & raw rectum

Hi GM,
Hope too that you do not have a fissure, just get it checked out, also sometimes we can get a few piles so get your GP to check it out, they may even prescribe something for the soreness, Chemotherapy and Steriods can make the skin a bit thinner thus taking longer to heal....as you probably know...
I wish you all the best...
Take care with Love JanieB

Re: IBS & raw rectum

Hi. After making sure the bleeding is nothing serious, I have another solution to add to the other ones. It may get some laughs out of people, but it works. The solution is Desitine for diaper rashes. One time I had the same thing and one of my kids was a baby, so I tried it. Worked like a charm! Good Luck, Janet

Janet:

The Desitin is not a bad idea, I have diaper bound infants at home and their moistened baby wipes are a comfort by time. Use the unscented ones to avoid irritation.

Good Luck!

Re: IBS & raw rectum

I have started using the Cottonelle wipes found with the toilet paper at Wal-Mart. I also found a brand for kids that are flushable. These work wonders for me and my ten thousand wipes, as I like to call it.
The hemroid pads work wonders too. I think its the witch hazel in them. I feel your pain. I was there a couple of weeks ago and last Saturday. Take care and I hope everything is fine.

Re: IBS & raw rectum

Take the unscented baby wipes and pour about 4 ounces of witch hazel in the container to soak them. The witch hazel is very soothing on the anus when it becomes inflamed from multiple bowel movements. You can even get a small "purse size" one that you can take with you. Wipe using toilet paper and then wipe using the baby wipe that is soaked in the witch hazel. Works great for me.
