post cholecystectomy diarrhea/IBS

Hello there...I am a 29 year old female that has a history fo diarrhea (8-10 times/day) and had seen a GI doctor for this 2 years ago...he basically coined me as a "poor mother" and seemed to feel that I needed some attention and to be away from the children. Anyhow, I got "drug of the week" every time that I went to see him...none of them worked. Then I got pregnant and he wanted nothing to do with treating me. After the pregnancy, I had severe mid-epigastric pain at night and they finally conceeded to do a ERCP to detect if there was any gall stones in the bild duct...there were. After the procedure, I got post-ERCP pancreatitis, which put me in the hospital for two weeks. I then had my gallbladder removed in December of 2001. As of January 2002l, I have 8-10 bouts of diarrhea. I called the GI doctor again and was told that was not possible, and that they wanted to do parasite testing...I did...everything was negative. Then they put me on Questran (an acid/bile binder) in hopes that this was a result of having the gallbladder removed. The very next day, my husband had to call the family doctor, who admitted me to the hospital with severe dehydration, and 20 bouts of diarrhea between 6-10 am. In the hospital they did CT of my abdomen, a colonoscopy and an upper stomach scoping. Most results were negative for any findings, however, we are still awating the biopsy results of my colon; and the CT of the abdomen showed a narrowing of my small intestine. I STILL HAVE DIARRHEA!!! What should I do?...I have surffed the web, but don't know what to really look for...IBS or post-chole symptoms...I fit into both. I have found a web site that is WWW.overcomeibs.com My Story of Beating IBS...but I need to pay $24.95 to access any concrete information. Have any of you ever done this site?..is it worth it?...Please let me know. Thank you, Carrie

Hi Carrie,

I'm not sure, but have you tried reducing the dosage of questran? You could always try using very little and increase the dosage until you get formed stools. Too much questran seems to cause problems for people.

I believe that since bile is a natural intestinal laxative, too little can cause food to stagnate in the intestine. This may cause overabsorption of water, which is the cause of hard stools.

Cheers, Raju.

Re: post cholecystectomy diarrhea/IBS

Isn't it sickening when you go to the hospital for one thing and end up with 3 more problems to deal with!

Have they suggested bulking up with some type of fiber powder? Doing soapy water enemas? Balancing the flora content of the digestive track?
Drinking more water, staying away from caffinated beverages and foods?

And drinking 1to2 glasses of water 1/2 hour before meals works good for digestion too. What did the doc. advize anything?

Let us know the details ,,,and by the way if you put any websites on this board you first have to check it out with the moderator or they kick you off...just though I'd warn you about that. Diana

Re: post cholecystectomy diarrhea/IBS

Hi, Carrie. Boy, hon, do I feel for you! I've had IBS for 20+ years, but the diarrhea worsened considerably after my gall bladder was removed in '97. However, I just continued with multiple bouts per day, periods of incontinence, etc. until the last 3 months. That's when I discovered "bile salt diarrhea" on the internet and the use of Questran or Colestid. I'm really sorry that the Questran didn't work for you - I'm taking 2 Colestid every morning, and for the last 3 months I've had formed stools (sometimes several times a day, but no "D"). How much Questran did you begin with? I started with 2 grams of Colestid, and it took a couple days to get into my system before the "D" was under control. Since then, everything has worked fine.

I hope you can find a cure. In addition to the Colestid, I also increased my fiber with Metamucil wafers (fiber helps bind you), and taking calcium supplements (which have helped some people control their "D"). Everyone is different on what works for them - keep checking the internet. There are several free web pages with information regarding IBS. Have you been checked for allergies that may be causing your "D"?

Good luck to you!
Katie G

Re: post cholecystectomy diarrhea/IBS

Ask your doctor for digestive enzymes. These may help if you've had pancreas problems. I took them(Viokase) while I had gall bladder problems and they helped me tolerate food better (less diarrhea). But I still had the pain so I had my gall bladder out. I do not have a problem with pain or diarrhea anymore. Sounds like something else is wrong too. Enzymes may help.
