This is my first time here. It's nice to know I'm not the only one suffering because of IBS. I'm 22 and have had problems for a couple years now, although they had couldn't figure out why (surprise surprise). My symptoms consisted of diarrhea and a lot of cramping, but recently it's turned to constipation. My doctor prescribed this brand new medication, Pamine, thinking it would help. Unfortunately, the main side effect is constipation. Last Friday, my boss took me to the ER because I was in so much pain. They took x-rays and found 2 gallons of gas in my stomach and a major stool block up. The doctor said to start a high fiber diet. So far, the pain has decreased some. I'm just curious now, what do I do for gas (since fiber increases gas)? It's like you do one thing and end up with another problem! Any suggestions?
I had the most TERRIBLE problem with gas up until recently. It was actually my only symptom. No real C or D. From what I hear, Citrucel is great. It alleviates constipation without the gas. Another option is Metamucil, but I have heard some complaints about it.
You didn't say what type of fiber you are using but I use Psyllium and it will cause gas when you first start using it but it generally goes away after a short time. It ferments and is broken down by you intestinal bacteria. Citrucel does not breakdown so it results in less gas. Both are good water soluble type fibers.
The purpose of fiber is to make the food you eat move more readily through your intestines but the gas may take a little while for your system to get use to ---as you know everybody reacts differently. Just be patient for awhile <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif">
