warning about Diet stuff for IBS people!! ( a funny story) : )
Hey everyone...here's a little warning, and also a little question.
Well, let me explain what happened: I was hungry, so I decided to get some gummy worms. Well, I decided to just grab some off the shelf at the grocery store and put it in the cart. As I was munching on them, I looked at the package, to see that these were suger free. I ate the whole package on the ride homw (about 15 minutes. I was very hungry!) and then, I read an ingrediant.
"Containes phenolyptalate (something like that) May act as a laxitive in small children. Best if eaten in small portions"
Well, I continued my day, and then a 1/2 hour later...KABOOM! Well...you get the picture. It was a horrible experiance. Every 5 minutes, it was like, well, how to put it this way...I was 'peeing out the wrong end'. It was like overdosing on a laxitive. I had bad butt pains for days. *ahem! I hope this isn't so explicite!*
Anyway, a warning to all with IBS who have problems with diarreha! No-suger products MAY irritate you! I know that in diet cola drinks there is a small amount of this stuff, and alot of other diet foods, like non-fat yougert.
My question is this: I know people with IBS have problems with constipation, too. I wonder if this product can be used as a gentle laxitive in small doses? Has anyone noticed this when eating diet foods?

Hmm...I have C type and I don't think that it would work. I don't know how to spell it but I think you're talking about phenolalanine (ugh why can't I spell it??) and it's in diet drinks, sugar free stuff, crystal light. To be perfectly honest it backs me up more than it helps...gives me lots of gas, etc. But thanks for the advice. Maybe other people will have different reactions.

Hi China!
Sorry to hear that happend to you. I too, cannot eat anything with artificial sweeteners in it (example: sorbitol, aspertame, saccarin etc.) I was always chewing sugarless gum and I was having a lot of D problems until my husband, thank God, read an article about how artificial sweeteners can cause D.
I instantly quit chewing the gum and things got a lot better! Now I know and I'm glad you said something on this board in case anyone else didn't!
Take care, stay well.

Also beware of things that contain Guar Gum. It has the same "laxative" effect. Believe it or not, I found it in popscicles...read the labels. You'll be surprised where it is. It is also in Slim Fast bars...usually 15 minutes after eating one of those, I would be in the bathroom. No wonder people lose weight on it!
