eating disorders and IBS, gastroparesis

I developed IBS and gastroparesis after suffering bulimia with laxative abuse in my teens. My doc said laxative abuse damages the nerves that control the digestive system. My question is, if that's the case, how can things like diet or enzymes and other supplements help - wouldn't the answer be in the direction of helping the nerves to repair or helping them function better? Any thoughts on this?
I would like to hear from anyone in a similar situation and know what kinds of things have helped you.
