I stared taking acidophilus and I'm not sure what to think about it. I am a bit more "regular" but I'm more gassy than I was before I started taking it. I still have "d" episodes (it seems to be around "that time of the month"). <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/eek.gif">

I guess I have tried every brand of probiotic supplement on the market over the years. Of course the object of taking an acidophilus/ lactobacillus supplement is to replace the bad bacteria in your intestines with friendly bacteria. With alot of diarrhea the good bacteria readily gets washed away so you need to replace it with good "flora". The process does produce gas and I have found it also does after taking a round of an antibiotic. Trapped gas in the colon can be painful at times.
In the past I just ate alot of yogurt and took the capsules. I recently bought a bottle of Probiotica from Wal Mart---it is made by the same Company that makes Imodium and Tylenol. It contains Lactobacillus Reuteri that is made from mother's milk from Sweden processed in Denmark and became available in the US about 6 months ago. It is probably the best I have ever used,and of course more costly. But, my painful colon was ok in just 2 days --taking 2 daily. I tried PB-8 and Kyo-dophilus for several weeks with just alot of gas and no real relief.
I started taking acidophilus 2 months ago. The only things I have noticed since taking it is that the amount of mucus in my bowels have decreased substantially and the last 2 episodes I have had were around my period. I am going to continue with the acidophilus, so far it doesn't seem to be causing me any other problems. Good luck to you.
When you take antibiotics, have diarrhea for whatever reason, the bacteria in your intestines just get out of balance and cause all sorts of digestive problems -such as---Gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, pain, foul odor,etc. The object is to re-establish the good bacteria and get rid of the bad or re-balance the bacterias.
I read that there are 400 different bacteria in the intestines that I'm sure each has a purpose to keep us healthy and many have names like Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantanum, L. bularius, L. casei, Bifidobacterium infantis and the list goes on and on. Acidophilus is just the short name that is commonly used and is a Probiotic.You could do a search for "Probiotic" and you'll get alot of information to read. I can't list them because it contains ads.
I tried acidopholus in the past for all the good it did me.
What I've recently discovered to help me when I have stomach pain (from acid) is that as little as 4 oz. cherry yogurt helps.
I'd also get vaginal bleeding, and Bing cherries healed it (doctors often can't even help this). I've already helped a few bleeders one of who had been bleedng for 2 months after miscarriage, & the doc did not help her, but the Bing cherries did. Y'know who else are helped by cherries? Gout patients.
Ironically, though chocolate in a harsh-form (such as Oreo's) irritates me & can trigger my bleeding, especially if taken with tart tea, nevertheless, chocolate in a more <B>creamy</B> form such as choco-mousse, or choco-cake, or choco-chip cookies, helps me when I'm constipated.
